Damn it's gorgeous. I was listening to Neil Young's Harvest Moon the other day and thinking about how it's a much sweeter song than NRH. He actually sings about the object of his affection instead of just mentioning that someone else happened to be around. Interesting...Neil and Pegi are still together after all these years. Agree with you on the C&S tracks. They are great but ruined by radio. Interesting that I once read that Stevie Nicks spoke reverentially in an interview about how strongly she related to Same Situation. I'm still exploring that idea in my head! As for the Stevie tracks you mentioned, I strongly agree there...she's a great songwriter. I was thinking more along the lines of Dreams, Landslide, the FM tracks. I absolutely cannot stand Stevie Nicks's "Dreams." I think it has to be one of the most boring songs ever - just the same thing sung over and over again, and the same few notes. And I love "JOTMAS". Having a favorite Joni song changes with what's going on in one's life. The really angry songs on "DED" sometimes even feel appropriate, depending on mood swings. Overall, the songs on "Hejira" seem to speak to me the most - and this is 36 years after it was released. Yes, the albums in the upcoming boxed set are probably her "best", but "Turbulent Indigo" is terribly underrated, which is a shame, because it ranks up there. I hope she has one more in her! I hope she's feeling the love! ________________________________ From: Michael Paz [mailto:michael@thepazgroup.com] Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2012 11:29 AM To: Gary Hanick Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2012 #1452 Actually my fave of Joni's may be the live version of Amelia/Pat's Solo/Hejira on S&L. And, as far as a Joni song for the ages, as much as I am really tired of it, "Big Yellow Taxi" should be included. Everyone and his uncle has done his / her version of it, but a lot of people associate the song with Joni. "Shine" is worthy, too. I guess people may think it's "simplistic", but Joni songs take decades to sink in. The Judy Collins version is just so schmaltzy for me. It sounds almost... I dunno... Good Morning Starshine-Ish to me, if you know what I mean. Kinda like it was a Hair reject or something. BYT was on my sh*t list as in "makes me wanna shove pencils in my ears to cause permanent damage", but I gotta say, I am cautiously not as annoyed by it anymore. For me, Help Me and Free Man in Paris are the two I now avoid. And I know it's a sacred cow, but River is going that way too, which I never thought I would say, because it was essentially what blew my mind when I found Joni. But too many people have done it, and frankly, when Sarah M. remakes a song, it's the kiss o' death. Mea culpa I feel guilty even mentioning River..... I admit, I still love CSN's Woodstock, and I like that schmaltzy version by that loungey sounding group - Southern Comfort something or other. LOL, and I admit I love Nazareth's This Flight Tonight. But unlike Sally, though, I love most of Stevie's singles - well, from The Wild Heart and Rock A Little, anyway. As for Bella Donna, I could live without the duets, and why After the Glitter Fades was a single is beyond me. How Still My Love or Outside the Rain shoulda been brought to the masses. Love all the new discussion! There are a LOT of corny, schmaltzy, mediocre and copycattish versions of BSN around, to the point where, if I hear that yet another artist is going to cover it, I just cringe. I really don't like the Judy Collins version. The arrangement is too bland, and a lot of covers use that version or a similar arrangement, rendered even blander, likely because Judy had the hit with it. In fact, I don't even like hearing Joni sing it anymore. Having said that, every now and then, that song will come on, either one of Joni's versions, or a cover, and I'll think, "Hey - that sounds good!" > > "Big Yellow Taxi" annoys the living crap out of me, no matter who sings it, because too many people just copy what someone else has already done. I don't mind the "Shine" version as much, but would still probably skip it eight times out of ten. I don't care for "the Circle Game" at all. I think I've heard it too often and it just seems interminable sometimes, especially that damn chorus about the seasons going round and round and the painted ponies going up and down - enough already! Likewise "Woodstock." Yeah, yeah, child of god, blah-blah-blah, although I do like "we are stardust/we are golden". "River" is heading towards "Make me wanna barf land" because there are just too many damn covers and now it seems to have morphed into a Christmas standard. The next thing you know, they'll be singing it in churches. Too bad, because I actually like that song, but other people are ruining it, damn them! > > I'm pretty much off most of "Clouds" with the exception of "Tin Angel," "I don't know where I stand," "I think I understand" and "that song about the Midway." > > Most of the time when I hear a Joni song played in a shopping mall, I want to yell, "She did write some other stuff, y'know!" > > > > > >> ________________________________ >> From: Betsy >> To: joni@smoe.org >> Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2012 4:57:28 PM >> Subject: BYT and other hippie songs >> >> Big Yellow Taxi is one of the few Joni songs that you still hear in public. And it tops my list of songs that I wish she could unwrite. Maybe its the only song on my list....there are less popular songs I could do without, but they aren't foisted upon me at the pizza parlor. >> >> As for other disliked signature JM songs, Woodstock has its place in history. Chelsea Morning is also pretty corny, but Joni sings it so beautifully. Judy Collins' version is awful. For a long time, I thought I hated Both Sides Now and The Circle Game, but now I feel like they are deservedly classic. >> >> Does anyone else have songs they just hate? Still love 'Landslide'. I don't like hearing covers of it, though. It's just too much a Stevie Nicks song in my head. 'Silver Spring' is another nice one. Guess I like depressing songs! Those make me want to stuff my ears with cotton! Oh what radio play can do! :0 But unlike Sally, though, I love most of Stevie's singles - well, from The Wild Heart and Rock A Little, anyway.
