I was impressed by that as well. My guess is that she's chewed a lot of gum while not smoking. Although there weren't as many places where people couldn't smoke in the 80s, she had attempted to quit several times by then. I don't think the gum-chewing has anything to do with not smoking. I've noticed in films of John Lennon's recording sessions that he also chewed gum, as do other. I believe the purpose of the gum is to keep the saliva flowing in the singer's mouth and lubricating the voice. We were actually able to get it to her kitchen counter last year. I don't know if it ever got heard or if it ended up in the recycling bin but we did hand deliver it to her house and her housekeeper said she'd place it on the counter with my note. Also, Joni's always been a cat lover, so maybe her pets would be a good topic too. And she loves bowling, gardening, cooking and playing pool. Then you can always ask how she's been feeling (but not sure if that's too personal). But somehow I don't think it will be a problem. That piece Jane Fonda wrote a few months ago indicates that Joni loves to talk and jumps right into a conversation! The 'naked knitting' story. You have a GREAT memory for the details. LOL Here's the clip you are referring to: http://jonimitchell.com/library/video.cfm?id=185 Joni's own account of knitting in a "cabin/shack" at Lord Jim's in Canada which, I believe, is now known as Rockwater Secret Cove Resort. Somewhere I read (can't find it now that I'm searching) that she stayed in Cabin 11 for almost a year during the construction of her house. Would you give a gift of something you knitted to someone who you know knits?? Just trying to understand the knitters thought process here. ... or I might be naked!!! :-) The question REALLY is would you sit in bed and knit naked, like Joni would?? haha Well, I had no idea that what I thought all these years was a sleeveless VEST is actually called a TABARD!! And thank heavens for the online dictionary that actually voice-speaks out the word so one can hear the exact pronunciation. hmmmm, how many times does one have to use a new word in a sentence to remember it??? Recently ran across this photo of Joni and just wondering, do you think Joni knitted this dress? (Hope the link works......photo #13) http://www.davidhiller.com/index.php#mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&s=12&p=5&a=0&at=0 Thanks for the word education.......and nice pinterest page by the way! This may be of interest to Joni fans, as Joni called his a plagiarist. "Oh yeah, in folk and jazz, quotation is a rich and enriching tradition. That certainly is true, it's true for everybody, but me. I mean, everyone else can do it but me. There are different rules for me. And as far as Henry Timrod is concerned, have you even heard of him? Who's been reading him lately? And who's pushed him to the forefront? Who's been making you read him? And ask his descendants what they think of the hoopla. And if you think it's so easy to quote him and it can help your work, do it yourself and see how far you can get. Wussies and pussies complain about that stuff. It's an old thing - a part of tradition. It goes way back. These are the same people that tried to pin the name of Judas on me. Judas! The most hated name in human history! If you think you've been called a bad name, try to work your way out from under that. Yeah, and for what? Playing electric guitar? As if that is some kind of way equitable to betraying our Lord and delivering him up to be cru! cified. All those evil mother fuckers can rot in hell...It's called songwriting. It has to do with melody and rhythm, after that, anything goes...It's not really a conscious thing." I figure because it is being pressed by Rhino that it may be far better than the budget boxes being put out by the likes of Columbia/Legacy. On those releases, they just stick a CD in a cardboard pocket and pay little regard to the authenticity of the packaging. They are not at all like the well-done Japanese mini-LP CDs, unfortunately. And just look at the artwork. It looks amateurish to me. But then again, it is Rhino.
