Borderline WAS an excellent single, no doubt about it. It was also a HUGE hit. There's a distinction between singles and hits. Joni's had a number of singles, some better choices than others. She's only had ONE top 20 hit. You Turn Me On peaked at #25. I'm not saying that you can judge the QUALITY of the music by the chart position ("Disco Duck" went to #1), just that Joni was not inclined to write HITS, and that's a good thing for us all. Though I have been very fortunate to see Joni live several times I've never had the opportunity to meet her in person so I just couldn't pass up a potential face-to-face. When I was offered the chance to share accommodations it was a sign from the Goddess and I jumped at it. I'll pick up Laura at the airport and we'll drive up from Seattle; it's a beautiful drive with mountainous terrain and if the weather is dry (Seattle gets a bad rap for always raining) it should be a lovely ride. Once we cross the border we go through Vancouver and hit the ferry system and will hopefully arrive in time to join Phyliss and Bob for dinner on Friday night... perhaps Anita and Steph too. I am imagining a nice Italian dinner with fellow JMDLers on Saturday night, lots of laughter and anticipatory anxiety wondering what to say to Joni if I get to meet her. Some of you have seen the life-mask I have. It's allegedly of Joni and I think I'll bring it along to show her and ask if the myth of it being stolen from her hotel is a fact or just something someone made up. If it turns out to be of her, I'll offer it back to her in trade for a map of Canada on the back of a bar coaster - LOL what do you think? I also thought perhaps I'd ask her about her garden and ask her what her favorite indigenous plants for the Pacific North West are. Depending on how long I get to chat... IF I get to chat... I will also talk to her about her estate sale, ask her if she was pleased with the outcome. I may also give her one of each of the trinkets I've made for different Fests (thus bringing up the JMDL) I don't know how it will go so I'll have to be ready on the fly for none of these topics to come up. I'd really like to also give her my copy of "Safaris to the Heart" and tell her she should give it a serious listen. Hey Dave/Robin, if she accepts it will you send me another copy? LOL I am looking forward to this trip so much I can't say anything else that's coherent. love, Cassy NP: Annie Lennox - Why ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2012 14:00:34 +0100 From: Anita Subject: Re: September 22 & Conversations with Joni Steph can knit and has produced some beautiful jumpers and cardigans. I was impressed by that as well. My guess is that she's chewed a lot of gum while not smoking. Although there weren't as many places where people couldn't smoke in the 80s, she had attempted to quit several times by then. I don't think the gum-chewing has anything to do with not smoking. I've noticed in films of John Lennon's recording sessions that he also chewed gum, as do other. I believe the purpose of the gum is to keep the saliva flowing in the singer's mouth and lubricating the voice. This may be of interest to Joni fans, as Joni called his a plagiarist. "Oh yeah, in folk and jazz, quotation is a rich and enriching tradition. That certainly is true, it's true for everybody, but me. I mean, everyone else can do it but me. There are different rules for me. And as far as Henry Timrod is concerned, have you even heard of him? Who's been reading him lately? And who's pushed him to the forefront? Who's been making you read him? And ask his descendants what they think of the hoopla. And if you think it's so easy to quote him and it can help your work, do it yourself and see how far you can get. Wussies and pussies complain about that stuff. It's an old thing - a part of tradition. It goes way back. These are the same people that tried to pin the name of Judas on me. Judas! The most hated name in human history! If you think you've been called a bad name, try to work your way out from under that. Yeah, and for what? Playing electric guitar? As if that is some kind of way equitable to betraying our Lord and delivering him up to be crucified. All those evil mother fuckers can rot in hell...It's called songwriting. It has to do with melody and rhythm, after that, anything goes...It's not really a conscious thing." If Joni crocheted this I am amazed. The pink dress she wore at the fabulous BBC show had a crocheted inset and im sure it was handmade ... she also sewed a lot of her own clothes. I would love to pick her brain about which items she sewed.herself ... One clue about her expertise knitting ... She said in the pwwm show that she didnt purl so everything she knit looked like chainmail (garter stitch). This indicates pretty basic knitting skills. She probably knits for the same reason I do ... Stress reduction ... She was obviously trying to ward off cold turkey!
