Know what was really awesome? (mostly in hindsight, really) It's to think that back then Joni would start out, open up with her beautiful set, and then, on the break, I would go up and do my short set and sometimes Joni would come out and sit down with her coffee and her smoke and listen to ME play! just look at that cover pic and think about THAT! She smiled and applauded and looked me dead in the eyes as I played my music. It didn't seem like such a big deal then... Joni was 'one of the gang'! Always joking around and laughing with us. She was great! But thinking of it now... can you imagine? Joni Mitchell used to watch and listen to my sets!!! ...and I think she actually liked it! This auction actually closed on Dec. 10, 2011. Both items went unsold (at that time). The minimum bid was $5,000.00 for the Lyrics and $3,000.00 for the Drawing. That's probably why there were no bidders. Both items are 100% Legitimate. Written and Drawn by the hand of Joni Mitchell. I've seen numerous examples of Joni's handwriting. You can view both items in a pdf.file - Item #1 available @ On page #1 you'll see the handwritten "For Free" lyrics offered at auction. On page #2 you'll see the handwritten "Real Good For Free" lyrics from 'MORNING GLORY ON THE VINE. They're obviously from the same hand. On page #3 you'll see the Drawing of Graham Nash reclining on a sofa. I sent a copy of this drawing to Joel Bernstein. Joel in turn eMailed a copy to Graham. Graham remembers the drawing, remembered Joni drawing it and certain other events of that day. Although this was a quickly-done informal drawing, it is in keeping with other pencil or felt pen drawings done during this period. Check out page #4 for several similar drawings from StarArt. Both items were relisted and Sold! by another auction firm earlier this year. The Lyrics sold for $1,625.00, and the Drawing sold for $2,048.00. Considering some the prices I've seen, these might be considered a bargain. Frankly, I was more than a little surprised by the question of authenticity. No reputable Auction Firm would do that which is suggested by the question. - - - - - - Steve Dulson pointed out > They LOOK authentic - but the lyrics look different than the handwritten ones in the LOTC LP. > There are also minor differences in the words - ""Cross" instead of "Across", for example. > One thing I wonder about is why Joni would write them out again - maybe a donation to a charity, > or something? They aren't a first draft or anything - the song (as she performed it in 1969) went > "...a black limousine and two white men..." > > It does look like the Joni flowery handwriting that we see from time to time. Steve is completely correct here. I had actually forgotten about that line "... a black limousine and two white men". According to my records, the earliest recording of "For Free" was at the MISSISSIPPI RIVER FESTIVAL in Edwardsville, Ill. on July 7, 1969. This concert was later broadcast by NET-TV as The SOUNDS OF SUMMER. It contains the line "... a black limousine and two white men". You can hear (download) a copy at the URL listed above. Item #2 There are -2- additional recordings that contain that line subsuquently changed to " ... a black limousine and Two Gentlemen". The NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL - July 19, 1969 and The DICK CAVETT SHOW - Aug. 18, 1969. The two gentlemen were Elliot Roberts and Graham Nash. They were occasionally accompanied by a high-school student named Joel Bernstein. - - - - - - Here's where it get interesting ... "For Free" is included in -3- of Joni's early SongBooks as "He Played Real Good For Free" 1. Ladies Of The Canyon 2. JONI MITCHELL: Songbook Complete volume number 1 (1966-1970) 3. Joni Mitchell Complete All three songbooks include -2- versions of "He Played Real Good For Free" In the 1st version the lyric is: "Cross the street he stood" and "a black limousine and two white men" In the 2nd version the lyric is: "Across the street he stood" and "a black limousine and two gentlemen" You can check out the -3- SongBooks for yourself at the URL listed above. She fought back and won. To be fair, it was a rather egregious application of the code. I'd be curious to see her federal returns, especially the occupation line. (Painter derailed by circumstance? Composer? Retired?) Her property tax bill is probably minimal, considering she bought the Bel Air place 40 years ago. Gotta love Prop 13! She's also possibly a social conservative, as some have inferred that she is anti-abortion. I prefer to think she's pro-choice, and adoption was the option she chose. - -Betsy > Re Everything for Nothing, it does suggest that Joni might have just a > little bit of the fiscal conservative running in her blood ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2012 16:30:34 -0400 From: "Robert Sartorius" Subject: RE: "For" songs Stewart replied to Bob's popquiz "Song For Sharon For The Roses For Love or Money Looking out for Love For Free Toughest Omission: The Windfall (Everything for Nothing) :-)" I have not heard of "looking out for love". Help ? I do recall that Joni is fond of Fur Elise. I have heard that she was an admirer of the composer. Today, I listened to Joni in the car - first time in a month. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. I love her work as much as the foreign singers who translate it before covering it. Re Everything for Nothing, it does suggest that Joni might have just a little bit of the fiscal conservative running in her blood. Isn't a person on the receiving end of largesse supposed to have at least a little bit of gratitude? Or is the right response, for example, and by way of analogy, to the person making a million dollars a year who has contributed $29,000 per year to Medicare Part A via his payroll taxes and now reaches age 65 really "thank (er, f__k) you, you don't need no stinkin' Medicare Part A. And, by the way, you have not been paying your fair share." Kind of like Joni's maid (A Man Needs a Maid, if you know what I mean). Bobsart Now for some (additional) non-joni content (if you don't want any, skip from here on). PS - in addition, the top 50% (who pay all of the federal income taxes), by virtue thereof also pay for roughly 75% of Medicare Part B. (For those of you who do not know it, Part B is financed roughly 25% via premiums, and 75% via general revenues - which means FIT plus borrowing - which, by the way, will be paid off by the children of the rich). In addition, the higher earners among the top 50%, when they retire, will get to pay higher Part B premiums (ranging from 35% to 80% of the cost of the Part B program) as a thank you for having over-contributed toward the Part B program over many years, so that the people who have contributed nothing over the years to Part B (because they paid no FIT) can get their part B benefits with premiums that cover only 25% of the cost of the Part B insurance. I don't really mind the taxes and the extra premiums - I just mind the attitude that says "FU - you don't pay enough (er - "your fair share")". PPS - means testing for Part A is part of the new Republican financing solution for saving Medicare Part A (and yes, I oppose it), so don't all you fiscal liberals and Democrats go all rogue on me over this issue (I happen to be an independent). Besides, I'm an actuary, and actually understand this stuff. There are fairer ways to fix this (all of which will cost extra money, and will require limiting plaintiffs' bar, while we're at it), but not enough space to go into it here. PPPS - it is a sophistry to suggest that certain low income earners are paying for rich retirees' Medicare Part A with their payroll taxes. What the low earners are doing is making a token contribution to a system that they will benefit from by multiples of what they have put into it when they turn 65, at which time the large majority (80+%) of their Medicare benefits will be paid for by rich people. If you prefer, think of 100% of the Medicare benefits for the rich retirees as being paid for by the rich workers, which still leaves plenty of the rich workers' taxes left over to pay for poor retirees. This, while the puny taxes paid by low wage earners make a relatively small dent in the benefits being paid to low income retirees. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2012 21:02:06 -0400 From: Marianne Rizzo Subject: joni 101 please, if you will . . . keep me in the class It is my major. She performed two songs, "For Free" and "Woodstock", or perhaps I should say two songs performed by Joni were broadcast. You'll note, "For Free" and "Woodstock" are both Piano Songs.
