Last Jan. a JMDL members wrote > Subject: Joni Auction Items - Authentic or Not? > Found these two items that were up for auction here. > (URL deleted, Auction Closed) > Do you think they are authentic Joni? This auction actually closed on Dec. 10, 2011. Both items went unsold (at that time). The minimum bid was $5,000.00 for the Lyrics and $3,000.00 for the Drawing. That's probably why there were no bidders. Both items are 100% Legitimate. Written and Drawn by the hand of Joni Mitchell. I've seen numerous examples of Joni's handwriting. You can view both items in a pdf.file - Item #1 available @ On page #1 you'll see the handwritten "For Free" lyrics offered at auction. On page #2 you'll see the handwritten "Real Good For Free" lyrics from 'MORNING GLORY ON THE VINE. They're obviously from the same hand. On page #3 you'll see the Drawing of Graham Nash reclining on a sofa. I sent a copy of this drawing to Joel Bernstein. Joel in turn eMailed a copy to Graham. Graham remembers the drawing, remembered Joni drawing it and certain other events of that day. Although this was a quickly-done informal drawing, it is in keeping with other pencil or felt pen drawings done during this period. Check out page #4 for several similar drawings from StarArt. Both items were relisted and Sold! by another auction firm earlier this year. The Lyrics sold for $1,625.00, and the Drawing sold for $2,048.00. Considering some the prices I've seen, these might be considered a bargain. Frankly, I was more than a little surprised by the question of authenticity. No reputable Auction Firm would do that which is suggested by the question. - - - - - - Steve Dulson pointed out > They LOOK authentic - but the lyrics look different than the handwritten ones in the LOTC LP. > There are also minor differences in the words - ""Cross" instead of "Across", for example. > One thing I wonder about is why Joni would write them out again - maybe a donation to a charity, > or something? They aren't a first draft or anything - the song (as she performed it in 1969) went > "...a black limousine and two white men..." > > It does look like the Joni flowery handwriting that we see from time to time. Steve is completely correct here. I had actually forgotten about that line "... a black limousine and two white men". According to my records, the earliest recording of "For Free" was at the MISSISSIPPI RIVER FESTIVAL in Edwardsville, Ill. on July 7, 1969. This concert was later broadcast by NET-TV as The SOUNDS OF SUMMER. It contains the line "... a black limousine and two white men". You can hear (download) a copy at the URL listed above. Item #2 There are -2- additional recordings that contain that line subsuquently changed to " ... a black limousine and Two Gentlemen". The NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL - July 19, 1969 and The DICK CAVETT SHOW - Aug. 18, 1969. The two gentlemen were Elliot Roberts and Graham Nash. They were occasionally accompanied by a high-school student named Joel Bernstein. - - - - - - Here's where it get interesting ... "For Free" is included in -3- of Joni's early SongBooks as "He Played Real Good For Free" 1. Ladies Of The Canyon 2. JONI MITCHELL: Songbook Complete volume number 1 (1966-1970) 3. Joni Mitchell Complete All three songbooks include -2- versions of "He Played Real Good For Free" In the 1st version the lyric is: "Cross the street he stood" and "a black limousine and two white men" In the 2nd version the lyric is: "Across the street he stood" and "a black limousine and two gentlemen" You can check out the -3- SongBooks for yourself at the URL listed above. Items #3, 4, & 5. - - - - - - I sometimes wonder about these long posts ... but send them anyway.
