Must get back on the full list, but I did want to chime in a wee bit on the current threads about covers, originals and Safaris of the Heart. I think that it's great that Shari finds so much in Joni's originals. How else did we all get so moved and swept away for so long other than by the superlative nature of Joni's music. Or maybe I should say how else did I get swept along for the last 44 years? I am so grateful that Joni's songwriting has been so awesome that folk can offer interpretations that are so diverse that something new emerges in an often familiar melody or lyric. That's why our Cover King, dear Bob, has done such a great job - to have the interest to keep bringing new arrangements to my ears and heart is just great. And Joni's originals remain great. And there, on this very site, are contributions from the Mutts and Robin Adler. I have said it here many time before, but I have heard many great singers cover Joni's songs and seen many great players - but no-one has come close to stirring so consistently the feeling in me that I had when I saw Joni play for the first time in January 1970 - - apart from Robin and Dave. I am just so grateful that now Joni doesn't get out there to play and sing these days that we have the chance to see Robin, Dave and the Mutts interpreting Joni's music in a way that I believe Joni would just love. Seeing Robin and Dave play Joni has been a particular blessing for me, and I continue to feel enormously grateful that I have lived long enough to see them play and experience Joni's music in what I feel is a truly authentic way, Anita x ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2012 15:24:33 +0000 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: RE: Covers I remember the singer I was thinking of, Charlie Dee from the Netherlands. Thanks for your always kind words, sweet Sue - we share the drive to expand the Joni knowledge base, whether it's by finding covers of her songs or identifying tunings and chord patterns. And yeah, dem Mutts are something else - - Joni folks of heart and mind to be sure. Regarding your question about the Scandinavian singer, I'm not sure but it's probably Irma Schultz, who first recorded a CD of Joni covers with a band that called itself "A Bird That Whistles" and more recently released another whole album's worth of Joni covers in Swedish language. Speaking of artists for whom English is NOT their primary language, I always love the non-English language versions because that takes the efforts to another level. Translating and still maintaining the balance, rhythm and poetry of Joni's words has to be an incredible challenge. Roxana Amed does "Amelia" in both English and Spanish on her CD. Her guitarist loved it so much that he recorded it too! And I'll never forget when I got the LP of an Estonian singer who translated THREE Joni songs into Estonian.Joni is loved the whole world over. As for Best cover for 2012...that would be an interesting competition indeed. I agree that not all the covers are mint, but I REALLY love the jazz covers, especially David Lahm and Diana Krall, and there have been some killer versions of Dry Cleaner from Des Moines (the cover by Karla Downey was very Andrews Sisters). I'm always amazed when someone tackles that one. I also love to hear obscure covers ... Electricity by Danilo Monno ... this is a good example because there are so many international covers where you can tell English isn't their first language but they still do a great job. Her name escapes me but there was a woman from Sweden or Finland who actually got kudos from Joni for her covers (what was her name Bob?) For many years I ignored the covers and I'm so glad I got over myself and started downloading Bob's finds. Even the cheesy ones sometimes are still fun. :-) I also miss our dorky friends Jade and Dexter! :-) It would be nice to give a JMDL award for best cover of 2012 ... I used to feel the same way about covers, especially Joni covers. There are some very dismal ones out there, and a lot of overly poppy versions of the same old BSN, Circle Game and so on. I was raised first on the ideas in the "Free to Be, You and Me" album and have always tried to live that ideal and hope that others reciprocate. Anecdotally, at the age of 5 I used one of the songs on this album as support for a demonstration I arranged for my Mom. I was wanting to dress myself and leaned heavily on their lyric "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink". Even though I've been listening to Joni for around two decades I'm still discovering her (and more so recently!). I'm not ready to move onto cover artists but when I am ready, thanks to this bunch, I have got the goods at my fingertips. They feature a Cambodian singer and mix those sounds with psychedelic rock. It was originally recorded for a Matt Dillon-directed film called "City Of Ghosts". It's a very cool take on the franchise; certainly the only one in Khmer. Dave, Thanks for sharing. I'm really happy you guys are enjoying playing music and the success around that. I have a hard time listening to anyone but Joni sing her songs. I realize a lot of you do covers and I hope I'm not saying anything ghastly here. I'll just keep out of the covers conversations. *slinks away into the background. I probably heard about her first from someone on this list. I'm really impressed with her "tapping" technique. She demonstrates here: http://www.kakiking.com/media/videos/tapping-guitar-kaki-king She also did the music for a film called "August Rush" which is about a young boy who plays guitar in the streets to make money. Here's a clip. Despite the fact that we see this young boy playing, it's actually Kaki King (would you call that strum-synching?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSI4_9OhwV8 >________________________________ > From: Lindsay Moon >To: Joni List >Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2012 4:40:25 PM >Subject: Spice&Kaki > >(No, not OUR Kakki) > >That clip of Spice is really good! Check out her site. The ad is over to the right and she's wearing bright red Gap jeans. At first I thought it was a guy, but I stand corrected. Very Joni-esque, I thought. > >Lindsay > >http://www.kakiking.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2012 15:54:23 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: The Suspense is over I sometimes feel that being a Joni fan exacts a price in some ways.> Oh, no doubt about that, Anita - to be a Joni fan, a true fan, almost requires a bit of an emotional journey, a willingness to look beyond the catchy chords of Chelsea Morning and the cool jazzy sounds of Help Me and invest yourself into her life and times and how it relates to your own. It means LISTENING and FEELING her work, not just hearing it. Is there such a thing as a "casual" Joni fan? I seriously doubt it.
