I think that every generation believes on some level that: a) Their generation's music was the greatest ever and the music of the current generation is just noise; and b) Why would anyone want to bring children into a world that is going to hell in a handbasket? Like Joni says, 'sometimes I get that strong longing to settle and raise a child with somebody'...and the truth is that even in tough times, the joy of parenting child is an antidote to a lack of hope. There's always a sense of "I want my kids to have a better life than I had, etc" (Not that we're doing a great job of that, mind you.) But like you say, we continue to hope and strive for that. From my own perspective, raising my son has been the greatest joy I've ever known. And...another great point regarding Joni's lust for flight and whether or not she is trying to fulfill the dream of her father. I'm sure that Bill shared that dream with her often. I have more to say about that but not sufficient time right now. Meanwhile somebody else can step in and share their thoughts on the subject.
