One is that we have a five piece band that would have little or nothing to play on several of the guitar/vocal tunes from Hejira and they can be better featured on certain tunes that groove or rock. The other reason is we don't have every song on those records worked up yet. It's a memorization curve for Robin on every one of those lyrics, since we don't use lyric sheets on stage (ahem, Aimee Mann) and there are also guitar tuning logistics to consider when playing the live show keeping the momentum moving. Bob, this is a brand new arrangement of The Jungle Line, different from the Safaris to the Heart approach. I've reharmonized the whole song with dark Allan Holdsworth-esque chords and developed an ECM jazz rhythm concept for it. We don't have plans to record or shoot video, but the lighting looks like it would come out well if Steve, Roch or Kakki wanted to set up a tripod and film it. Maybe I can get a recording from the audience to my flash recorder. We are using the house PA system so getting a multi-track audio capture like we did for the prior DVD won't be possible. I usually take a ton of sound gear to these shows and I'm sort of looking forward to only having to bring instruments - a mere six guitars! My dear friend Nicole Weinzweig is an artist who lives in Wales. We've been online friends for a few years, and a few months ago she mentioned to me that her favorite Joni album is DJRD. Turns out that she paints while listening to (a more accurate word would probably be "blasting") DJRD, as well as Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," and sometimes Philip Glass' "Koyaanisqatsi." Well, that bit of information certainly got my attention, and added another layer of appreciation when I look at images of her paintings. But ... oh ... it gets better. I learned the other day that Nicole attended a Joni concert in the UK in 1983 or so, and she happened to finish Joni's cup of weak black tea with honey and lemon. Nicole doesn't even like tea with honey and lemon, but wouldn't you finish Joni's cup of tea if you had the chance? (I would.) Nicole still has that cup, and she's been using it ever since to dip her brushes in water as she paints. So there may just be a little bit of Joni's DNA in each of Nicole's paintings. Check them out when you have a moment. I like them a whole lot, and I think more than a few of you will like them, too. And yes, prints and some originals are available for purchase, including her sketches. :-) http://www.snowshackstudio.moonfruit.com/ You can also subscribe to Nicole's Facebook updates at https://www.facebook.com/nicole.weinzweig/ Thanks for indulging me ...
