All the best, Michael ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2012 00:18:31 -0400 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: Songs of Healing hey all - i've never thought of todd's 'healing' as a healing album. it's an album about the need for healing, especially of the world and society. and the need for personal emotional healing, for example in the song 'compassion'. by the way, 'time heals' is from the 'healing' release, the original package included a standard 12" lp and a 7" inch 45 with 'time heals' b/w 'tiny demons', a song about germs or viruses. however, the title song 'healing' actually does seem intended to actively assist healing. the form is concerto, three movements, fast slow and fast, (it was the whole of the second side of the lp on the original) and the lyrics are as if todd was leading a meditation. the principles are very influenced by buddhism, and the sound is electronic psychedelia. healing part ii is particularly entrancing, with fakish sitar sounds curling around lines like this: Where you are going You cannot take your body You are on a journey, The baggage is too heavy You can leave your legs behind you, You will learn to fly You can leave your arms behind you, You will touch the sky You can leave your head behind you, You are thought itself You can leave the rest behind you, You are breath itself although soothing is not the same as healing, there's a lot of overlap (aspirin doesn't heal joint pain, but by bringing down inflammation, it facilitates healing). simularly, soothing emotional pain is not the same as healing it, but there's no clear line between the two. for soothing the emotional pain of soul-wrenching grieving, the song i've gone to most in my life is kate bush's 'moments of pleasure'. i found so much comfort in that song in the years after it was released (1993 - 1996), which were the years of the aids epidemic in which i lost the most friends. and it also helped continue my process with my mother, even though the song was released 15 years after her death in 78. kate wrote it partly to process the death of her own mother. the simplest message of the song is, 'remember what you loved about them', but that wasn't always easy in those years of pain. patrick np - string quartet no. 2, jefferson friedman chiara string quartet - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2012 12:58 PM To: Happy The Man Cc: joni list Subject: Re: Songs of Healing Maybe not necessarily about Healing, but "I Think I Understand" talks about overcoming fear which is a component of healing. It would be like removing the Jim Morrison's bead necklace from the "Young Lion" photo. Nice to know he is offering the original as well. I didnt see anything on the site about it, maybe I missed it. Also interesting to know that he didnt like the way the cover turned out.
