I believe they were still married, but seperated, when Larry was dating Diana Krall and Joni was with Don Freed (Joni's mom introduced them in 1993). Joni and Larry divorced 'officially' in 1994, altho they were separated for years. Here's a clue as to why they divorced. http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2487&from=search "In 1985, Joni Mitchell and Larry Klein discovered she was pregnant. In her first trimester, however, Mitchell miscarried. Klein had lined up a recording date at The Wool Hall in Beckington-Near-Bath in Somerset, England that would be his first major production; recording an album with former Cars' bassist Benjamin Orr ("The Lace"). Klein delayed leaving until Mitchell said it was okay for him to go. Mitchell apparently came to view the decision as her husband giving his job a higher priority than her health. In 1991, their marriage fell apart." And in the book, "Girls Like Us" Larry continues: "In retrospect, it was really a bad thing," he says today. "I didn't know very much about what happens to women when they miscarry - the potential psychological problems, the depression. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have gone. It really damaged our relationship; she saw it as me putting this job higher in importance than her health." "On Thanksgiving 1991, Joni and Larry's marriage fell apart. Larry moved to a house in Venice and "spent five years - probably the most difficult period of my life - completely reconstructing myself," Larry recalls. As Dave Naylor, who remained close to both Larry and Joni, puts it, "It wasn't just the miscarriage" that marked the end of the marriage for Joni. "She needed some inspiration, some play - she needed some interaction with men." Not too long ago, I too thought Joni was lonely and holed-up in her house until I started seeing articles/photos, etc. about her out and about and busy. And her grandchildren have been seen around her home in Canada (so I am assuming Kilauren and Joni are speaking and keeping in touch). Seems to me she's leading quite an active life. We just don't read about it in the papers so we don't actually know about her day to day activities. The 'press' isn't that interested in her un-Kardashian lifestyle! LOL Anyways I hope this helps you, like it did me, to feel more like Joni is living a full life, and enjoying herself. She recorded "Court & Spark" on her last album and her new one has TWO..."Let The Wind Carry Me" and "Lesson In Survival". Significant because in both cases these are the first KNOWN recorded covers of these songs. I'm assuming the lyrics resonate with her as she is transgendered - I freely admit my ignorance on this topic. But I love that those two songs were paired as on the album. I'm sure many mothers have a hard time with their sons wearing "kick-pleat skirts" and "eyelids painted green" not to mention them "staying up late in [their] high heeled shoes" but you gotta be you despite all the Myrtles around you. I had no idea there were no other covers. That's crazy! Two of my favorite songs. Sure there have been real rocky times and ups and downs, just like anyone else in the real human realm, but she is not estranged from any of them. All may not always be bright and rosy but it is real and pretty solid at the heart. My feeling is that Joni is very sensitive but she is also very strong, too. And that is good news for all of us who love her! For many years I used to worry a lot about her, too, but have come to see her as as an enduring survivor.
