She was an artist herself and had painted the art for her first cover and all of them since have been her doing. She is one of my favorite poet/musicians and it was an honor to share in creating the artwork that held what I think is maybe her greatest album. The photographer was a young guy, Tim Considine, who was an actor and the star of one of the biggest TV series of that time, Spin and Marty. I donbt remember if he was Spin or Marty. Because of the title of the album it occurred to me to make the black and white photo we selected of her print in a blue color. Like old time Ferro cyanotype photos. It is a process that produces beautiful rich blue prints. I am proud of this cover and feel the power of itbs simplicity really represents well the music inside and is a good example of the benefits of staying out of the way of inspiration. It just occurred to me that when inspiration comes it is like those bumper stickers that say bGet in, sit down, shut up and hold on.b Bob From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com To: cokelike@yahoo.com Cc: Joni List Date: 06/07/2012 02:27 PM Subject: Re: Fwd: Message from website, re Blue Sent by: owner-joni@smoe.org Hi Cokelike, The art direction for this cover was done by Gary Burden. He played solo. I had pretty good seats and the undeniable feeling that he would sense my presence and ask me to sing with him. It must have slipped his mind. If you had told me then that I would someday _meet_ James taylor, much less sing with him or kiss his cheek, for God's sake, I would have absolutely died right on the spot, but then I wouldn't have lived to meet Joni Mitchell and gotten to tell her about the necklace I made for her in 1974 and how I gave it to a roadie after her show in St. Louis with a note and express orders to deliver it to her. It was kind of endearingly naove of me. I wouldn't have gotten to ask her the question that had burned in me for years: Did anyone else notice, or was I the only one, that on the cover of _Hejira_ her left arm looks like an erect penis? I had no sooner begun to mention it to her when she piped right up and said, 'Oh, the cock!' So my mind can finally rest." Here's another excerpt with Joni content, dealing with recording "Fat City". - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------ "The only candidate I chose to have a meeting with was Larry Klein, Joni Mitchell's producer, bass player, and husband at the time, which didn't hurt his case. They were making exquisite records, and I had to figure that Joni would suffer no fools - Klein must be sharp. I met with him in New York in late 1990, and he was quite sharp, actually. [...] "Larry had a studio, called the Kiva, in his home in Bel Air, and we agreed that this would be the best place to record "Fat City." Let's just cut to at least part of the chase: Joni Mitchell lived there, too. I was hardly oblivious to that; in fact, I was in a bit of a stupor about it. I wasn't sure I could handle being in such close proximity to my undisputed hero without losing consciousness. I needn't have worried. There's never a lull in the conversation with Joni around. She is an expert storyteller, a master of language, and it was pure joy to listen to her speak in the same poetic yet down-to-earth, streetwise vernacular she used in her songs. She commands your undivided attention, which you're happy to give. Joni is endlessly fascinating, funny, and intense, still like royalty to me, although she will tell you anything. I found out more about her than I could ever have dreamed, about her boyfriends, her career, and her experiences. She's low on bullshit, high on opinions. "I saw her writing a song Her notebooks were not dissimilar to mine - basic lined paper, notes and lyrics written by hand, but still I could hardly take it in - she was human. I got to see her come into the studio having just woken up, still in her pajamas. We all went out to dinner every night, sometimes to a vegetarian hot spot called A Votre Sante, which Joni referred to as "Mow de Lawn." "When I asked her advice about the fact that my boyfriend had called a live-sex 900 number, she swiftly brought out the I Ching and threw it for me, simultaneously confessing that she once had a perv boyfriend, too. She gave me presents - a photograph from an exhibit she had up at the time and an antique Native American silver necklace of hers. We took a lot of Polaroids and had a technique of peeling the backing off while the photo was still developing so we could mark it up with the side of a nickel. I have a Polaroid of Joni hand-decorated by the lady herself - she embellished her clothed image with breasts and pubic hair. "I was fretting over a lyric one day for a song called "Kill the Messnger" - "Sometimes someone drifts by/ And our nets get entwined in the..." The what? Joni looked at me as though I were heinously dense and shrugged her shoulders. "The sea," she said matter-of-factly. Well, of course. She called me Shawnykins and probably remembers none of this, but I always will. I laughed and ate and talked with Joni Mitchell. Even now I can hardly believe it, but then again I am a classic dork when it comes to meeting famous people." >________________________________ > From: Richard Flynn >To: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com >Cc: 'Joni List' >Sent: Thursday, June 7, 2012 3:18:41 PM >Subject: Speaking of covers: (includes off-color Joni content) > >In Shawn Colvin's new memoir there is a fair amount of interesting Joni >content, including this tidbit: >"The first time I saw James Taylor was at the SIU arena as well.
