[tony sandy ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2012 12:56:06 +0100 From: tony sandy Subject: Going over documentary again. Me and my partner watched the Joni documentary together last night. She said that though she was like us and looked conventional conventional on the surface, underneath she wasn't (Mick Jagger and his seeking a knighthood in the UK for instance, betrays him as an unauthentic rebel against conformism). Another point was her appearing before a big audience and not being very comfortable with it - with some guy shouting up at her to 'smile.' This was followed by a piece later on, where a friend told her that her approach was pessimistic and she replied no, it was realistic. This again is about authenticity and being yourself. Why should she smile to please others? (Unto thine own self be true). Why should she be upbeat, when life drops you in it? (The emotions are like piano keys and life would be boring if all you played was one note, over and over again). This urge for blandness that celebrity culture has brought with it, is beyond me. Why exist if you can't explore? Why conform to normality and stupidity, when creativity requires shots in the dark? (Mistakes). Let's stay safe and not experiment, so that Joni never discovered Turbulent Indigo but sounds the same now as she did in the sixties. Records mean you don't have to go on tour forever, repeating the hits of your youth, unlike in former times in history. Creativity needs freedom to be yourself (The Great Boig in Peer Gynt). It does not require a programmed robot to endlessly repeat the same thing over and over again into eternity.
