I've always been a Joni fan since the beginning but during the 80s I lost touch and just assumed she stopped making albums! I completely missed Chalkmark and Night Ride Home but when I heard about her releasing Turbulent Indigo I ran out and got it and loved every second of it. I really feel this album more than any other shows her amazing guitar craft. The tunings are masterful and the message throughout, from Sex Kills, to Magdelene Laundries, Turbulent Indigo and Borderline are brilliant. Sire of Sorrow took me some time to absorb but of course I love it. Amazing. I believe Turbulent Indigo is her late period masterpiece. I like Sex Kills a lot and always felt that Joni never really rocked it out enough to push the anger/energy where it needed to be. Lo and behold, back in 2005 the band Roine Stolt released an album titled (prophetically) "Wall Street Voodoo" - all originals excepting a cover of Joni's "Sex Kills". For me, they really brought this song where it needed to be. Check it out. That thumping chord at the end of each verse, the raised tempo, which is lost on the CD version, though that doesn't detract from the recording. I sorta figured YouTube would have it but they don't let it access it here at work because they think we would just be goofing off and being non-productive (which IS in fact what I am doing). As for TI - I agree with you on labeling it her late-period masterpiece. It did, in fact, win the 1995 for "Best Pop Vocal Album" which is kind of a funny category for it but where do you niche it anyway? I got it after the Grammy award; loved Joni but wasn't that impressed with the arc from DED-CMIARS-NRH although all had some good stuff on it. I figured I'd give her another shot. With TI she regained more of the production and engineering control I think - certainly sounds that way to me. This coupled with her journey into the backwoods and soul breakdown, mentioned in the same program, is very shamanistic. Kris Kristofferson advised her against giving so much of herself in her songs and being too open but this too is shamanistic as it is openness to all experience - the innocence that makes us receptive to all existence - the open wound that is our heart out there. I skimmed over the idea throughout each of my five viewings of Woman of Heart and Mind. I have done a quick search online for 'Joni Mitchell' and 'shamanisn' and this fascinating talk that she gave for Earth Day came up: http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2030 Now things are getting *really* interesting. So glad I joined this email discussion. Joni has expressed appreciation for several covers that are very different from anything she could have done. (Tina Turner, etc) Although I do think she could have "rocked it" with the right band.
