Visions of babes dancing on tables screeching the chorus. I've often wished someone would take up Night of the Iguana and do it for the dance floor. It would work you know. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 May 2012 07:31:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Ken Subject: Re: Joni, Neil, etc. Hey, Bob, Doesn't like Court & Spark? How dare he?. And, another book on Neil Young? I've already got several on my book shelves now PLUS I heard this week Neil is releasing a new "memoir" (due out in a few months but will be previewed at an upcoming book fair in June). Between the numerous Woodstock, Laurel Canyon, CSN (&Y), and Neil books, I thought I'd read all there was to know about Neil. I heard this week that Patti Smith will be interviewing Neil at the upcoming BookExpo America. NEW YORK (AP) b Neil Young has a special gig in New York City this June b at the annual publishing convention, BookExpo America. The convention's organizers announced Monday that the rock superstar will speak June 6 about his upcoming memoir, "Waging Heavy Peace," scheduled to come out this fall. Young, 66, is known for such songs as "Heart of Gold," ''Southern Man" and "Rockin' in the Free World." Young will speak on stage at the Jacob Javits Center with an interviewer to be named later. One possibility: Stephen Colbert, who has interviewed Young on his Comedy Central show and is already a featured speaker at BookExpo. Meanwhile, while searching for the article Jim referred to regarding a Jaco movie in the works, I came across this piece about Joni's jazz era: http://tinyurl.com/cupxjez However, he does NOT like C&S, only praising the run that came after it. "To this day, music critics routinely cite albums like Blue and Court And Spark as examples of Mitchellbs greatness. Ibve never quite got that.Of the latter, it sounds like Jonibs desperate grab at the same sort of commercial payday that similar artists from the same late-1970s singer/songwriter boom like Jackson Browne were already cashing in on b but one which nonetheless proved wildly successful in Jonibs case. Still, to me, that album reeks of L.A. studio stink to this day." He's also not enamored with anything that came out before it. However, he has written a book just released this month called "Neil Young FAQ" that supposedly has quite a bit of detail about Neil meeting "Sweet Joni" back in the day. It's not available for my Kindle so I may have to pick it up for a summer beach read. Trying to keep up and catch up - here's another batch of NEW Joni covers for you. It's a solid collection of some fine tunes - our old pal from down under Christine Sullivan brings a snaky take of "Black Crow", Lauren Hooker does a very unique "Song To A Seagull", and a couple of mini-concerts from Kevin Halporn & Flor Guillen and Be Slow. You'll like the subdued sound of the latter and the musicianship of both. Tomas Nicholas changes the lyric in BYT to "heard the screen door twirl" so he can rhyme it with girl, and I'll admit that I did not know that a screen door could twirl. Damn. Anyway, here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/6p68dvt And here's the tracklist: 1. Kevin Halporn & Flor Guillen - For The Roses 2. Kevin Halporn & Flor Guillen - Hejira 3. Kevin Halporn & Flor Guillen - Both Sides Now 4. Mulberry Lane - River 5. Be Slow - Conversation 6. Be Slow - Little Green 7. Be Slow - Both Sides Now 8. Be Slow - River 9. The Folkal Point - The Circle Game 10. Stefania Tschantret - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 11. Christine Sullivan - Black Crow 12. Scott Pettipas - Both Sides Now 13. Tomas Nicholas - Big Yellow Taxi 14. Lauren Hooker - Song To A Seagull 15. Samantha Lam - Both Sides Now 16. Elly's Band - Chelsea Morning 17. Enigma Machine - Big Yellow Taxi 18. Uwe Arenz - Both Sides Now 18 tracks, 18 hits! Enjoy. If you're going to burn an actual CD and want me to share my artwork/insert, just send me a note off-list. Bob NP: David Gizara's Stevie Wonder tribute radio show ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2012 13:54:28 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: People's Parties / Same Situation I was listening to a cover of these 2 songs last night, and as I was really listening (as in with headphones and no other distractions) I had a couple of thoughts about the songs and thought - what better place to share my thoughts about Joni songs? We've been talking about C&S as being Joni's most commercially accessible album (not sure if anyone used that word but I think it's probably true), and while the songs and production and arrangements are all one big ball of ear candy, it's always appropriate to remember how strong the record is lyrically. I've talked about Down To You before, and to me it is the crowning achievement of the album, but this pairing of songs is also worthy of high praise. Of course, Joni pretty much 'joins' the songs on C&S, I almost think they are meant to be performed together as bookends but oddly until the cover I was listening to last night (both songs are joined together and performed as a 6-minute piece), no one has done that. Lots of covers of PP (20), a few of SS (5, a scandalously low number), but never before recorded as Joni did them as companion pieces on C&S. Obviously both songs are strong enough on their own (an understament - they are incredibly brilliant) but sung together reinforces their strength I think. What made the cover I heard last night so interesting to me was that the singer was right on pitch but had none of Joni's vocal power, so you get these very emotional and vulnerable lyrics sung in a somewhat vulnerable way. Joni's vocal is very confident and strong, emotional and beautiful, but I have to say that hearing the recording last night I felt a vulnerability that I hadn't felt on Joni's own recording. Obviously, I'm not intending to diss Joni's work on C&S in any way - this record is an incredible masterpiece and deserving of all the success it continues to receive. What also amazes me about the record is that nearly 40 years after its release, it doesn't sound the least bit dated. It always sounds as fresh to my ears now as it did then. And it still pulls up these intense feelings. I have a bunch more thoughts on both songs but before I write a novella I'll just put this out there and see what y'all think.
