Didn't realize roses were used in so many! Here are some other Joni flowers - Crocuses - Little Green Fucshias - Only Joy in Town Poppy & Orchid - Jungle Line I think there are a number of others, too. I typically don't, but my neighbors invited me over to hang out (they have a nice screened-in porch with a big screen TV) and watch the pre-race stuff, the race itself, and of course enjoy some snacks and beverages. The most exciting 2 minutes in sports (so they say) and "I'll Have Another" was the winner. The first Joni song that came to mind was actually 'Dancing Clown' since the basis for that song was a list of racing horse names (a weak inspiration for a weak song but I digress), but after the win I watched as they placed the blanket of roses on the horse's withers and I thought about 'For The Roses'. Further to that, it brought back an offline discussion I had with a JMDL'er about the number of songs that feature Roses: - -'For The Roses' & 'Roses Blue', both with the word in the title and significant use of the symbol; - -In Otis & Marlena she describes the sky being as red as meat and a cheap pink ROSE; - -Photo Beauty has that famous ROSE in her teeth in 'People's Parties'; - -Miss Fortune has a ROSE on her big-game gun in 'Dreamland'; - -'Tin Angel' has ROSES dipped in sealing wax; - -Richard says "you like ROSES and kisses and pretty men....(we all know the rest of that line); - -The protagonist of 'The Gallery' is naked in the ROSES; - -Dying ROSES feature in 'Songs To Aging Children Come'. - -She also mentions roses in two early unreleased songs ('Strawflower Me' & 'Poor Sad Baby') I can't think of any other really significant flowers in Joni's work. Was it a copout that she ALWAYS uses a rose or is another example of duality (the pretty sweet-smelling flower laced with the prickly thorns?)
