TW certainly has the right look for a young Joni, and the onstage confidence. I think the success will ride on a few things: 1) Can she pull off a JM song? (Will the director give her the easier tunes? ) 2) Can she capture JM? I have no idea if this young lady can act. I hope she can act and has a good enough vocal instrument for us to hear the best of JM, which is not easy to sing. :) Since this film is about three women, they can overlook a lot of Joni's material and focus on the easier tunes such as Raised on Robbery, Big Yellow Taxi, You Turn Me on/I'm a Radio etc. (I love those songs; they are just easier to sing than some of the other classics.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2012 08:37:11 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2012 #565 I don't know Carey Mulligan but I agree with your other two choices, Gary. Taylor Swift's audience is the Justin Bieber crowd and they WILL probably come to the movie as it would be her first movie role, so the price of admission at the box office will be paid. But I don't imagine for a minute that that audience pays any attention to who wrote the songs and if they did discover that these were songs by someone their grandmothers liked that would be an instant "oh magod, ewww, no waaay." As for Joni's more advanced work, I doubt that Swift herself even gets it. But bangs and high cheekbones she can pull off and she can strum a D with the best of them, so that will be good enough to convince most moviegoers that she too is just like the "legendary folksinger of the sixties." I wonder what would happen if Joni herself were asked if there is an actress she could envision playing herself as a young woman. You KNOW she'd have an opinion! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2012 13:56:06 +0000 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: RE: Taylor Swift as Joni Hey Laura, I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dave, I love Cate Blanchett, but it seems to me that the buzz around the movie is to cast younger actors. There has been no word either whether they would use young actors for 60s to early 70s, and older actors for the late 70s to 90s ... the only movie I've seen that nailed this kind of casting was Me and My Shadows, with Tammy Blanchard as young Judy Garland and the MAGNIFICENT Judy Davis as the older Judy. Interesting, Alison Pill played the young Lorna Luft ... If you haven't seen this movie, it's what I consider a great biopic of an amazing entertainer. Hi Sue, I don't have any real speculation but Anthony Kiedis has my vote to play James Taylor. If you are going to portray a legend, shouldn't the actress be of similar caliber? The Justin / Taylor Swift generation probably does not even know who Joni Mitchell is. And turning her into a one-dimensional character with bangs is not going to get them interested. It would be like Mariah Carey portraying Aretha. No offense to Mariah, but she is no Aretha Franklin. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni-digest@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni-digest@smoe.org] Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 10:40 AM To: joni-digest@smoe.org Subject: JMDL Digest V2012 #582 JMDL Digest Wednesday, April 25 2012 Volume 2012 : Number 582 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - -------- RE: JMDL Digest V2012 #570 [Dana Quillman ] - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2012 11:38:17 -0600 From: Dana Quillman Subject: RE: JMDL Digest V2012 #570 My vote is for Gwyneth Paltrow and I also think Roseanna Arquette looks alot like Joni. She's a nice young lady who happens to be beautiful. She seems like a good role model. No berating her audience or singing unflattering things about her mom. As for the "deer fetus" comment...do we know what kind of deer? Maybe a white-assed one? Anyway, I wouldn't mind if someone compared me to an extremely youthful creature with amazing cheekbones and long, slender limbs. Does Joni have an accent? Does Taylor? I'm not sure I hear either (from a standard US-California point of view). Eastern Canadians have a more pronounced/stereotypical accent than great plains/west coast Canadians, and I can't usually discern then from Americans. Maybe Joni has a particular cadence, which could surely be coached. Taylor kind of sold me with her stage banter when she performed with James Taylor, for whom she was named. I think the movie will inspire a small portion of its tween audience to become extremely devoted to Joni. So now it's payback time and when I go to this movie will spend my time talking loudly embellishing the story they're telling with my knowledge of Joni. Hahaha.
