Glad to see you back and even gladder that Travis is doing better. Last Saturday I helped throw a party for a friend of mine who just retired. I was the youngster in the crowd (54 to others over 65) and I played about 5 Joni songs ... (mostly in D tuning). After I played Cactus Tree, a friend sitting next to me (74) said with kind of a concerned look on her face, "is that a newer song?" I laughed and said, no it's from her first album! She was pretty shocked that Joni was singing like that in 1968. I've heard many women say in interviews when asked how Joni's music had influenced them that Cactus Tree was a major leap ... plus I Had A King ... - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Mark Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2012 9:55 PM To: Dan Olson; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: Joni Concert Without Joni - news article in L.A. Times I read the entire interview which was actually conducted with both Joni & John Kelly. Joni's long standing beef with 'Rolling Stone' about being labeled the 'Old Lady of the Year' is old hat by now. I chuckled a bit, recalling seeing Grace Slick on Roseanne Barr's short lived talk show some years ago. Grace had been talking about actively pursuing Jim Morrison to his hotel room one night and Roseanne gleefully asked her 'What other famous people have you slept with?'. Grace didn't hesitate for a heartbeat before coming out with 'All the members of my band except Marty.' Well shame on that Grace Slick for behaving the way many of the male rock stars of the day were behaving. As Joni says in the interview 'The madonna-whore thing was very prevalent, though, even in the "Summer of Love."' I don't know but I think Joni was pissed off about being singled out more than trying to slag Grace or Janis although the 'falling down drunk' remark isn't exactly flattering, I guess. But again, that was the expected behavior of the rock and roll men at that time. Excess was almost exalted in the rock heroes of the late 60s and during pretty much all of the 70s. Grace and Janis were more or less unabashed party girls who didn't seem to give a damn about the double standard. Joni didn't project that persona but she was the one dubbed 'Old Lady of the Year'. Go figure. It was a long time before I even thought about it but a song like 'Cactus Tree' probably was shocking to a lot of people back in 1968. For a woman to unashamedly sing, even in the third person, about having multiple romantic relationships was not something people were used to hearing in contemporary popular music. Nice girls didn't do that type of thing, much less sing about it. At this point I want to tip my hat to Anita for that wonderful post she wrote about being 15 and seeing Joni in concert, singing about out of wedlock sexual relationships. My feeling is that Joni has pushed many of us to think for ourselves over the years about many different things. John Mayer's new album has a song called "Queen of California." The song includes these lyrics: "Joni wrote Blue in her house by the sea I know there's gotta be a song that's waiting for me." The complete lyrics, assuming the ones I found are correct are: Goodbye cold, goodbye rain Goodbye sorrow, goodbye shame I'm headed out west with my headphones on Boarded a flight with a song in the back of my soul And no one knows I just found out her ghost left town The Queen of California is stepping down, down Hello beauty, hello strange Hello wonder, what's your name?
