Nothing to do with death, love or travel ... (beyond life travels). Truly a balm. Also when listening to a Joni album you haven't heard before you might onsider the atmosphere you listen to it in. "Hejira" needs to be listened o when you need to get the hell out of town or are experiencing anderlust. Anything recommended by a friend of Joni's must certainly be seriously considered! :) I forgot to mention another fave lyricist of mine -- honorable mention to Ani Difranco, her early work anyway. (It seems most great musicians go through a similar rise and fall -- early promising work in formative years, then peak creativity / greatness (usually albums 3 - 5, something like that), then gradual decline as the creativity well seems to run a little dry. Beatles and Stones, may be exceptions, but they are more collaborative efforts rather than the work of a single creative person, imho. Actually, now that I think about it, McCartney may be a true exception to this; he is a great song/music writer, but not a great lyricist in my book. Words / meaning are where its at for me: "Strike every chord that you feel; that broken trees and elephant ivories conceal." It just doens't get any more beautiful than that. We iffered on our favorite Ani period but that's cool. As for "when is the right time to listen to Hejira?", I would add that t's also very cathartic after a relationship dissolves, the title track n particular: "In our possessive coupling, o much could not be expressed o now I am returning to myself hese things that you and I suppressed" and "How can I keep that point of view, when I'm always bound and tied to omeone" Sometimes I sing "when I'm bound and gagged BY someone". These are great lines of affirmation that have given me strength on more han one occasion. Anytime I'm in a meditative mood, I'm prepared for it. The only other time it's really good is if you're trying to clear out nwanted party guests.
