You might also like her label mate Anais Mitchell who just released a new album and had a great folk opera album called "Hadestown" a couple of years back. Also, check out "Laura Marling" a early 20 something UK folkie whose lyrics are clever and way beyond her years. Also when listening to a Joni album you haven't heard before you might consider the atmosphere you listen to it in. "Hejira" needs to be listened to when you need to get the hell out of town or are experiencing wanderlust. This album will push you over the edge and having you pack a cooler and drive until you've lost all knowledge of space and time. We differed on our favorite Ani period but that's cool. As for "when is the right time to listen to Hejira?", I would add that it's also very cathartic after a relationship dissolves, the title track in particular: "In our possessive coupling, so much could not be expressed so now I am returning to myself these things that you and I suppressed" and "How can I keep that point of view, when I'm always bound and tied to someone" Sometimes I sing "when I'm bound and gagged BY someone". These are great lines of affirmation that have given me strength on more than one occasion. Anytime I'm in a meditative mood, I'm prepared for it. The only other time it's really good is if you're trying to clear out unwanted party guests.
