(It seems most great musicians go through a similar rise and fall -- early promising work in formative years, then peak creativity / greatness (usually albums 3 - 5, something like that), then gradual decline as the creativity well seems to run a little dry. Beatles and Stones, may be exceptions, but they are more collaborative efforts rather than the work of a single creative person, imho. Actually, now that I think about it, McCartney may be a true exception to this; he is a great song/music writer, but not a great lyricist in my book." Interesting take on McCartney. However, for my money, his songwriting did follow the path you suggested - peaking during the Beatles, and struggling - albeit with some successes - in his post-Beatle years. I have long drawn a comparison (or, rather, a contrast) between the lyrics of Penny Lane and Ladies of the Canyon. Both were written in their mid-20s (Paul was probably 24, and Joni was probably 25 when they wrote their respective songs). Any eye for detail can spot the similarities in theme, and the rather wide disparity in lyrical talent. Don't get me wrong - I loved (still do) Paul's songs, and I certainly admire his work ethic. But Joni really had it as a poetical lyricist.
