Based on the feedback, I will need to give Hejira another listen; it has been decades since I heard it. The jazz put me off then, but perhaps I have matured enough to appreciate it now. Thanks to Laura for the Laura Nyro recommendation. Anything recommended by a friend of Joni's must certainly be seriously considered! :) I forgot to mention another fave lyricist of mine -- honorable mention to Ani Difranco, her early work anyway. (It seems most great musicians go through a similar rise and fall -- early promising work in formative years, then peak creativity / greatness (usually albums 3 - 5, something like that), then gradual decline as the creativity well seems to run a little dry. Beatles and Stones, may be exceptions, but they are more collaborative efforts rather than the work of a single creative person, imho. Actually, now that I think about it, McCartney may be a true exception to this; he is a great song/music writer, but not a great lyricist in my book. Words / meaning are where its at for me: "Strike every chord that you feel; that broken trees and elephant ivories conceal." It just doens't get any more beautiful than that. I wish the best for all Joni lovers! You're certainly in the majority of folks as Blue seems to be ONE Joni album that bubbles to the top as her best work. Curiously though, in this forum I would dare say that that is the case. Speaking for myself, I was a latecomer to Blue - didn't hear it until the late 80's. C & S got my attention but it was Hejira that really established Joni as one of my major favorites. Based on your statements, I'd urge you to listen to Night Ride Home and Turbulent Indigo, as well. For brilliant lyrics, and some great music to go along with it, Paul Simon is way up there. I like how he sets his poetry to unexpected and changing rhythms. Maybe he can even pave the way for you to enjoy Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. So Blue isn't my favorite. And those songs are superb. The thing about Joni's post-Blue music is that the more I listen and pay attention, the more enjoyable it becomes. It's deeply layered. I had to educate my ears to appreciate it, even if I did like it immediately. Well, now you can't return. You're captive on the discussion list of Joni. Enjoy the ride. Yes, I rank that right up there in my top 5 or 10 favorite Joni songs. There are so many. I came in with FTR when it was first released. It blew me away. Something about "Hejira" though. It felt way personal to me, and still does. Check out "Turbulent Indigo" also. It took Joni around 18 years for those songs to come to life. If this is the case, let's hope she's got one more great one in the bag! I am excited at the prospect of hearing such a highly praised "new" Joni album! I will also find the time to revisit the others I discounted earlier and those I neglected to listen to at all post Night Ride Home. p.s., just curious, is Joni still a smoker? I feel that probably hurt her voice.
