Nearest record store is an hour from here. CD Baby.com is the indie mecca. I still like to have a real CD in my hands, although I do buy digi-songs sometimes from itunes or Amazon. And speaking of new releases (were we?), there are two by Janis Joplin: Live At The Carousel Ballroom 1968 (out Tues) and The Pearl Sessions (rel 4/17), with a disc of unreleased outtakes and such, details here: http://www.music-news.com/ShowNews.asp?nItemID=48054 RR ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2012 10:31:29 -0400 From: Michael Sentance Subject: Leonard Cohen & Joni If you like Leonard Cohen - and Joni Mitchell - you may have been read 1 Heck of a Guy's blog . My favorite thing to do on days like today (minus SXSW crowds) would to scan the cd and lp racks at one of these stores. I have just NEVER iked Springsteen! Could not figure out why; maybe you're onto something with he boring chord progressions. I have no formal training of any kind in music, an't read a note of music, and can't begin to analyze chord progressions, omposition techniques etc. I only know that most most pop music leaves me cold. 'd almost rather listen to nothing than to music that does not touch me. n the other hand, I cannot begin to explain what it is about Joni's music that hrills my soul and fills me like an intoxicating elixir. I only know it seems hanneled from heaven. For many years I thought something was wrong with me; hat I had stopped liking music. Never had an emotional reaction to anything I eard. Then several years ago I discovered Hejira, Court and Spark, DJRD on ouTube. Somehow I had missed those the first time around in the 70s. I istened, enraptured and thrilled to discover that I still loved music! It just ad to be the right kind of music for me. haron Sent from my iPhone - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2012 17:58:36 +0000 rom: gerard mclaughlin ubject: Re: Springsteen I couldn't agree more. Joni is in a league of her own. I don't get the eeling that she is channeling from the heavens though. I get that feeling ith someone like Arvo Part but know it is from silence that he gets his usic. Joni does a lot of time on her own too just being Joni. These great rtists are beyond writing their stuff just to make a buck which is what a ot of it is about in the music industry and probably why some people can't uy into "dross". Judging by how well dross does though most folks are appy with a familiar sound that gets them moving and there's room for all f that too. For me Bjork and Kate Bush and PJ Harvey , Laura Nyro, Little ragon ...oh and this new Scottish woman Emili Sande are decent enough ompanions on the Joni trail but MsMitchell is the queen o them all in my ook ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnpXF0GHd2o&feature=related n Wed, Mar 7, 2012 at 3:14 PM, Sharon Watkins wrote: > I'm American, so its not that he's too "American" for me. I lways had assumed he was more for the next generation after my own. owever, about one or two years ago, I saw him on one of the late- ight talk shows with an absolutely stupendous band. I can not recall he song he was playing. But I remember after seeing that erformance, understanding why he is considered to be a great in rock usic. Does anyone remember what the name of his most recent release efore this one was? I found it to be truly exceptional. - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2012 21:22:59 -0700 rom: Les Irvin ubject: Re: Bruce naysayers Bruce naysayers need to listen to "Nebraska" and "The Ghost of Tom oad"...
