I have just NEVER liked Springsteen! Could not figure out why; maybe you're onto something with the boring chord progressions. I have no formal training of any kind in music, can't read a note of music, and can't begin to analyze chord progressions, composition techniques etc. I only know that most most pop music leaves me cold. I'd almost rather listen to nothing than to music that does not touch me. On the other hand, I cannot begin to explain what it is about Joni's music that thrills my soul and fills me like an intoxicating elixir. I only know it seems channeled from heaven. For many years I thought something was wrong with me; that I had stopped liking music. Never had an emotional reaction to anything I heard. Then several years ago I discovered Hejira, Court and Spark, DJRD on YouTube. Somehow I had missed those the first time around in the 70s. I listened, enraptured and thrilled to discover that I still loved music! It just had to be the right kind of music for me. I don't get the feeling that she is channeling from the heavens though. I get that feeling with someone like Arvo Part but know it is from silence that he gets his music. Joni does a lot of time on her own too just being Joni. These great artists are beyond writing their stuff just to make a buck which is what a lot of it is about in the music industry and probably why some people can't buy into "dross". Judging by how well dross does though most folks are happy with a familiar sound that gets them moving and there's room for all of that too. For me Bjork and Kate Bush and PJ Harvey , Laura Nyro, Little Dragon ...oh and this new Scottish woman Emili Sande are decent enough companions on the Joni trail but MsMitchell is the queen o them all in my book ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnpXF0GHd2o&feature=related On Wed, Mar 7, 2012 at 3:14 PM, Sharon Watkins wrote: > I'm American, so its not that he's too "American" for me. I always had assumed he was more for the next generation after my own. However, about one or two years ago, I saw him on one of the late- night talk shows with an absolutely stupendous band. I can not recall the song he was playing. But I remember after seeing that performance, understanding why he is considered to be a great in rock music. Does anyone remember what the name of his most recent release before this one was? I found it to be truly exceptional. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2012 21:22:59 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: Re: Bruce naysayers Bruce naysayers need to listen to "Nebraska" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad"... I'm not a big Bruce fan either but those albums are stellar. On 3/3/2012 9:01 PM, Lindsay Moon wrote: > I don't get Bruce either and will plug my ears immediately when he comes on.
