Hi Bob, I'm listening now and really love Karmen Wolf's version of BSN ... excellent stuff. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bob Muller Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2012 12:05 PM To: JMDL Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 141 - Covers March On! Happy weekend, one and all...here's a BRAND NEW batch of Joni covers for ya, playin' real good for free. In fact, I'm grooving on them right now and I have to say they are truly scrumptious. Hard for me to pick a favorite...This mellow jazz on HOSL, the tangy original arrangement of This Flight Tonight by Pura Fe, quite a few deep tracks and even some vinyl. Have to even say that all three BSN's are really nice. If you've been hesitant to check this stuff out, this one makes a great starter that you'll love. And if you want to burn them to disc, I've even included an insert you can print out. And I also have to give a shoutout to my friends Allan, Paul, and Monica for their steadfast help in pointing me to and sending me stuff. Thanks guys! OK, let's get our Joni Covers on: http://tinyurl.com/7p9zkwj 1. Norbert Gottschalk & Frank Haunschild - Black Crow 2. Norbert Gottschalk & Frank Haunschild - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 3. Karmen Wolf - Both Sides Now 4. Pura Fe - Flight Tonight 5. Five Way Street - Woodstock 6. Chris Gonzalez - Cherokee Louise 7. Close Enough - The Circle Game 8. Rose Ranger - River 9. Andrew Cristi - A Case Of You 10. Ginger Sands - Woodstock 11. Perrine Mansuy Trio - Both Sides Now 12. Natalie John - The Hissing of Summer Lawns 13. Adam Frank - Court And Spark 14. Sue, thanks for that - way back when, about 12 years or so ago when I started the project I was playing catch up with over 30 years of Joni covers. Twelve years later, I have snagged the vast majority of those, many of which are dated-sounding (which is to be expected) and most of what I'm getting now is more modern arrangements and cleaner recordings of these songs. And BSN especially...with the success of Judy's recording, hundreds of easy-listening artists rushed to record the song. 35 years later, it remains BY FAR the most-covered Joni song (over 800 to date, and BYT in 2nd place with 300+) but it's being recorded a lot more outside the box now than it was during that 1967-1972 timeframe. However, that doesn't mean they are all as easy on the ear as that Karmen Wolf recording. Liesl Muller (no relation to yours truly), international cabaret star, recently released a BSN in a talky-chanteuse style and I think it's really rotten. I've said it before but it bears repeating - most Joni covers are being recorded by jazz artists these days and I feel like she would really feel vindicated by knowing that. Anyway, thanks again for giving it a listen and sharing your thoughts.
