I had a challenge at the Joni Tribute this weekend (I'll post about that later today) ... but since I broke a string on stage last year, I decided to stay in one tuning DADF#AD - I sang Chelsea Morning and Night in the City and then backed my friend Amelia Burns on Both Sides Now and All I Want. I didn't have a dulcimer handy (hahaha) so I cobbed up a quick Joniesque version of All I Want based on NRH/Turbulent Indigo type chord shapes. I couldn't believe it worked out! Simple but workable. Actually the shapes remind me more of NRH. The number one tuning and chord shapes sound so discordant and reminiscent of what she would be doing on Turbulent Indigo a couple of years later. I love to hear her play clean so I can hear the actual guitar parts that are so buried on the more over produced albums. Excellent!! Joni rules!! :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Feb 2012 13:31:22 -0500 From: Michael Sentance Subject: Taylor as Joni, Part deux As I first posted the "Taylor as Joni" story and link, I thought I would follow up a bit after so many interesting posts. (1) Katie Jacobs is both producing and directing the film. She has had a pretty successful career both producing and directing "House, M.D." over the years. Now "House" was a shadow of itself in the last few years but it was smart, and well-written for first few years. It also used music thoughtfully through much of the series. My guess is Ms. Jacobs is close to 50 so she should be respectful of the meaning of Joni (as well as Carly and Carole) to many. (2) John Sayles is adapting the book for the movie. If you're not a John Sayles fan, this is a problem. If you are - as I am - this is great news as he is an intelligent and thoughtful screenwriter. (3) Taylor Swift may be attached to this effort but may or may not be in the film. Swift was recently linked to a new cinematic version of "Les Miserables" musical but after rehearsals in London, her part was re-cast. My guess - and it's only a guess - that we'll see an episodic film along the lines of "I'm Not There". As she is only 22, Ms. Swift would be - and only be - the early Joni. Does she resemble the early Joni? This photo suggest it could work: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3791630592/nm2357847 From a music standpoint, we can only hope. But it will be interesting to see if and how it develops. As "House" has wound down, Ms. Jacobs will be focusing her attention to this activity with more focus. (4) A few other tidbits: Justin Long (the Mac guy in Apple's Mac/PC ads) has authored a romantic-comedy called "A Case of You". It doesn't directly involve music or Joni but the reference is clear. The Coen Brothers are well into a screenplay on Dave Van Ronk's memoir, "The Mayor of McDougal Street", life in the Greenwich village folk scene. The film is currently called "Inside Llewyn Davis" and Oscar Isaac is the lead. Justin Timberlake and Carey Mulligan are a husband and wife folk duo. Hmmm. As many of you know, in the CD "The Mayor of McDougal Street", Van Ronk covers "Both Sides Now". ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Feb 2012 08:58:02 -0800 From: Betsy Blue Subject: Chaka: Joni is my god. I found it interesting that at her concert in Houston last Nov. she had "It's love's illuisions that I recall, I really don't know love at all" written on her arm with a sharpie. And at her late August LA concert right after we departed our Joni's Jazz venture, she had, "But my heart cried out for you, California" written on her arm. Christina, let me know when you have a "New Orleans" schedule made up. I'm over there from time to time (200 mile drive) and I would love to run into you and hopefully hear you play and sing. And am booked for the 1st weekend in May (JazzFest). I know there are a few other list members considering JazzFest also. Will you be there? I just fb'd you.
