I stick with the grounding theory. Many say it also lowered her vocal register but Joni says the smoking had nothing to do with that either. Blames it on the rock chick years belting it out over a band. Either she is in complete denial or is very sure about things here. Again I stick with her position on it. Two doctors I know say there should be stronger health warnings on butter wrappers than on cigarette packets. Having seen the state of smokers in death compared to butter eaters ( lol !) they both chose fags over dairy. Mind you they are both of them alcoholic medical men of that I'm in no doubt though they'd both be intellectually scandalised at the idea ! Each to their own. I like butter and fags,,,fags as in cigarettes although I'm not immune to the other type...I believe that's an american expression... being one myself . Long live smoking Joni. She seems to know herself pretty well. Chain thinking is probably a lot worse for the health but you'd never hear a medical man say that. Yes, our Joni is not perfect. I love Joni so much & her music has been so important to me, but I think the chain smoking is very bad for her & she is in denial. I can't imagine the smells of chain smoking around her, but chain smokers do reek of tobacco. I wish she didn't smoke, but it's her choice. We all need things to get us through the day sometimes. It presented many challenges similar to those I had with Song to a Seagull. I think Joni was not established enough to be granted much studio time even for her second album and it shows in the general amateurish recording quality of the first two records. The opening track Tin Angel, produced by The Doors and Janis Joplin's producer Paul Rothchild was especially bad, with an absolutely dreadful guitar punch-in at 1:19; the subsequent tracks were engineered/co-produced by Henry Lewy and sound better although still with pretty bad tape hiss and that cold gothic mono reverb on the vocal that characterized the first album. Chris Coccaro (cKarma) recently told me he used to find the album unlistenable but persevered because the songs within were good. I hope I have greatly reduced the unlistenability factor!! I dedicate this effort to Anita G who I know loves this album, and who performed a fine rendition of I Think I Understand at her Conker Cabin soirie in 2010. For me the standout track is The Fiddle and the Drum, which is a brilliant vocal performance and a lyric that is as true today as it was during Vietnam. I will close this link in two weeks, so grab it soon if you want it... http://db.tt/0TIqB1eQ happy listen, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Feb 2012 10:44:37 -0600 From: LC Stanley Subject: Re: Time's Up (sjc) I'm smoke one or two for you if you will drink one or two for me. What about Aimee Mann ? Taylor will have to learn how to chain smoke for the part & I don't see that happening. Maybe she can pull it off as a very young Joni??? I have a nice Joni tidbit to share. My brother picked up a book for me of photographer Baron Wolfman's RS covers & of course Joni is among them. Included in the book is a page of proofs taken in her Laurel Canyon day - in front of the many paned window in her satin blouse. I had not seen all those shots before. The exhibit was held at the Markham Vineyard in Napa Valley, CA, but it ended 12/31 so maybe check out their website. Perhaps the book can still be ordered. It is a nice black & white volume. MORRIS ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Feb 2012 19:07:01 -0800 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Re: Taylor Swift as Joni I assume the producers are thinking Taylor Swift would be a box office draw, but what they overlook is that the age group who would want to see a film about 60's and 70's songwriters (ie. us) find her completely lacking in gravitas, guitar chops and vocal chops (see the Youtube of her singing with Stevie Nicks last year.) I teach her songs to 12 year olds on a daily basis so I've heard a lot of her records and they are the definition of formulaic, production pop with a few truck images included to appeal to the country base. They should pick an unknown actress who has all of the above, if you ask me. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Feb 2012 11:27:48 -0800 From: "Gary Hanick" Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2012 #238 Right on, Anita!
