While I was by and large underwhelmed by the quality of those comments, I did empathize with the source of the visceral, emotional sources of them. The comment that swayed me, however, was near the end. It reminded me that Taylor Swift will draw young people to see the film. That kind of exposure could not be accomplished by casting a no-name or any-old younger actress. At this point in her career (viz, retirement), increased exposure can only help Joni's legacy, and Swift's casting can only increase that exposure. The other night, I watched a recently released VH1 special on the 100 Greatest Women in Music (over the last 20 years). For those interested, Madonna topped the list. Lady Gaga was in the top 5. Annie Lennox made the list. As did Cher. As did Taylor Swift. There were some shout-outs to earlier legends in various genres, who did not make the list. They couldn't accommodate everyone who might have been deserving. But they couldn't leave out Joni, either, so she got a nod as a folk-rock "legend" (or some such), along with Ani DiFranco and Tracy Chapman. Joni's cohort group of artists and musicians "knows", but most of the world (still) does not. I for one will be happy if Taylor Swift does the part. And I hope she does an appealing job of it - even if it does not fully capture Joni's essence. Moreover, I hope that in her promotional appearances for the film, Swift will describe her experience in researching (discovering?) Joni and her reaction to that research/discovery. Some young people might actually go out and buy Blue (and then you know there may be more). It presented many challenges similar to those I had with Song to a Seagull. I think Joni was not established enough to be granted much studio time even for her second album and it shows in the general amateurish recording quality of the first two records. The opening track Tin Angel, produced by The Doors and Janis Joplin's producer Paul Rothchild was especially bad, with an absolutely dreadful guitar punch-in at 1:19; the subsequent tracks were engineered/co-produced by Henry Lewy and sound better although still with pretty bad tape hiss and that cold gothic mono reverb on the vocal that characterized the first album. > >Chris Coccaro (cKarma) recently told me he used to find the album unlistenable but persevered because the songs within were good. I hope I have greatly reduced the unlistenability factor!! I dedicate this effort to Anita G who I know loves this album, and who performed a fine rendition of I Think I Understand at her Conker Cabin soirie in 2010. For me the standout track is The Fiddle and the Drum, which is a brilliant vocal performance and a lyric that is as true today as it was during Vietnam. > >I will close this link in two weeks, so grab it soon if you want it... http://db.tt/0TIqB1eQ > >happy listen, >Dave ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Feb 2012 16:56:40 +0000 From: c Karma Subject: re: Melisma Hmm. That's a pretty tough one to figure on Joni's vocal style. I'm not sure that I'd call it melisima as the stylistic vocal elements she employs are always subservient to lyrical or emotional expression and don't seem to stand out as musical elements (except in the cases of where she stacks vocal harmonies in multi-layers like a horn section). I think the closest Joni ever came to actual melisma was on "A Case of You" when she staccato steps up "You" in the second chorus. My understanding of melisima is something that can best be illustrated by comparing on a use scale where say Alison Kraus scores a 1 given how she chooses to sing mostly in straight lines, and Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey might score an 8 or 9 by virtue (debatable) of their use of vocal flourishes. For varying degree, perhaps a comparison of the three well known versions of "I Will Always Love You" might illuminate, in ascending order of low to high use of melisima:1. Dolly Parton, 2. Linda Ronstadt, and 3. Whitney Houston. I may have it all wrong, but this is fun to consider. Singers? Robin? Taylor Swift can't carry in a tune in a hundred-gallon bucket and writes songs about porch swings, lightning bugs, and the various men who have "wronged" her. Fuck Hollywood." Now I'm sure TS is a nice girl and perhaps wonders herself whether she should have seven Grammy awards on her mantlepiece, but casting her as Joni betrays an utter lack of understanding of what the two women were/are about.
