However, I have to say this: even though some supposedly "healthy" people die young, and some people with bad habits live freakishly long, it is irresponsible to just say "oh, we can't control destiny" or whatever. My mother was a life-long smoker, and when she died 3 1/2 years ago at 73 from leukemia, my amazement was that I couldn't believe that it wasn't the smoking that killed her. My beloved Stevie Nicks' mother Barbara died this Xmas after 70 years of smoking, although from smoking related illnesses. But I have to say this: to say that tobacco is a "grounding herb" is pure self-deceiving bullshit. That statement has always made my blood boil. It's not a grounding herb. It's poison. As an ex-smoker, I know how addictive tobacco is. This July will mark my 9 year anniversary of quitting, and I STILL dream of smoking at least once a month. And I still love the smell of a fresh lit cigarette. And I still like to stand outside with the smokers to steal a whiff. But even when I was a smoker, and believe me, I wanted to smoke from sun up to sundown, without a break, I knew it was poison. And I am sorry, but even if the frigging Pope said "smoke on, my child, for this is a catechism herb", well, even I would know enough to call bullshit to that. I just wish Joni would say "sorry, I am too hooked to quit", rather than involving medicine men. Smoke all you want. That goes for everyone. Just don't pretend it's some special cosmic tool for you. As someone who loses and gains the same damn 50 lbs each year, I would never say "Carbs and trans-fats are my grounding energy". No, instead I know what my weaknesses are and each year I hope it's the last time I gotta drag out my "fat clothes". Same thing with smoking. It's all the same - we take comfort where we can. I just wish Joni could use some of that eagle's clarity to call a spade a spade. Lecture over.
