Stories like yours. It takes a lot to share something so deeply personal with people who are mostly strangers. If this were Facebook, I could have just clicked "like", but that's not really enough sometimes. Thanks for sharing that, Rick. All along I thought you just used the Coyote name as an online handle. >________________________________ > From: CoyoteRick >To: Corey Blake >Cc: "joni@smoe.org List" ; "Stewart.Simon@sunlife.com" >Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2012 3:39:37 AM >Subject: Re: Question for SuperBowl Breaks > >That's why I love this family. A lonely, mildly bored traveling guy can put something out there and very sweet hearts can educate him. I never freaking knew that was about Nyro. You might want to grab a cup of coffee if you want to read this diatribe. I love Nyro. Picture this, Laguna Beach,1976. Main Street bar. In that time, long ago, I was having a torrid affair with a Texan piano bar singer with the common name of Bill Wright that would eschew requests for NY NY for some random song Nyro penned. He would twist up Wedding Bell Blues, Eli's Coming, or Stoned Soul Picnic into something of his own. Something of his own that would stir me into some sort of feverish delirium. The rest of that story is best reserved for my memoirs pushed at an appropriate time after my death. But, I digress. This was the same Texan that solidified my budding passion for Joni Mitchell. Although she had caught my ear among now appropriate breaks in my bizarre Led Zepplin to Donna Summer listening habits, Bill's mystical renditions of everything from CAS and HOSL were generously put out there for rapidly aging Laguna Beach alcoholic homos. I got my nickname of Coyote from Bill. I cheated on him with a counter bad boy from the block away Jack-In-The-Box. News of my poorly disguised, yet embarrassingly frequent, indiscretion damn near made headlines of the Laguna Tide and Times. Billy was a subscriber. Still burnt orange from the summer sun and afterglow of JackBoy, I went to Main Street yet another night to hear a few sets of Bill's music. I walked down the short stairs to the piano bar; luringly awaiting his set break and the sweet cannabis that was certain to come my way as his most ardent, adoring, yet lustful, fan. Instead of walking into the juke joint and hearing his stylized renditions of something popularized by a singer/songwriter with whom he had a current passion, I heard strange keys played by my handsome interpreter. The first words he sang were, "No Regrets, Coyote" as he glared at me in my way-too-tight Jordache jeans, Adidas and Lacoste shirt (with the appropriate amount of in vogue chest hair peaking through the collar). He back introduced it as a new Joni Mitchell song. Still not a raging fan, I was like, "well, that's a typical Joni thing. Upbeat but sad." At the much anticipated cannabis break he told me that song was for me. He told me knew all about JackBoy and our time together was over. Dulled by the cannabis, I followed him back into the lower chamber that posed as a bar and heard his friends say, "How's it going Coyote?" I then knew why Scarlett wore the red dress. I never saw him again. Billy died a horrible, lingering death. I flew to Texas for his services. His brother recognized me among the mourners and greeted me as CoyoteRick. He took me aside to present a special gift. It was a tape Bill made as a demo for a record company. On that tape were several Nyro and Mitchell interpretations. Included was a version of Coyote which he dedicated to me for reasons only he and I understood. That tape is one of my most prized possessions. That's why I love Joni and our tribe here on the Internet that keeps Billy alive for me. He'd be so proud of us. He died 20 years ago today.
