There are also minor differences in the words - ""Cross" instead of "Across", for example. One thing I wonder about is why Joni would write them out again - maybe a donation to a charity, or something? They aren't a first draft or anything - the song (as she performed it in 1969) went "...a black limousine and two white men..." It does look like the Joni flowery handwriting that we see from time to time. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA FAR-West (Folk Alliance Region - West) tinkersown@ca.rr.com www.far-west.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2012 17:05:28 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: RE: Joni Auction Items - Authentic or Not? Well, I guess I should qualify - they may not be "originals". And probably are not. Funny how when a seller offers a "certificate of authenticity" it makes folks feel like it HAS to be real. Some of the Joni autographs on ebay are SO off the mark. Good point about the handwritten lyrics being in the album - I had forgotten that or wasn't aware of it to begin with. I bought the record on July 19, 1969 and had to be talked into watching the moon landing because I couldn't tear myself away from the record. I asked for her debut album for Christmas, and from Ladies of the Canyon on, I bought every album as soon as it was released, except for the compilation albums like Prairie Girl. When I first heard Blue, I was confused and annoyed because she didn't sound like the sweet fairy-princess I was accustomed to. I grew to love it, of course, and it was Blue that taught me to allow Joni to change. As for Overture, my only complaint is that it wasn't recorded loud enough compared to the rest of the album. I always crank Overture really, really loud, and then need to turn it down really quick right before Cotton Avenue kicks in. Aside from that one very minor annoyance it is sonic heaven to me. That first big bass note that Jaco plays is my favorite bass note of all time! I get goose bumps every time. Jack In a message dated 1/19/2012 8:08:38 A.M. Funny how the journeys can be so different and how opinions about songs and albums can vary so wildly. A tribute to Joni's diversity I would say. Jack, I have about 10 responses to your post so I'll just have to table them until we meet again. But I MUST respond to: My next-door neighbor is in his 30's and loves vinyl and high-end stereo. I've given him Hejira and DJRD on vinyl, but we hadn't spun either one much until last week. He had just picked up some monster Infinity speakers on Craigslist, cleaned and repaired them and was ready to show them off. I pulled DJRD and played side 1, because that Overture/Cotton Avenue is so amazing in BIG sound. He loved it and Talk To Me and Jericho as well. We didn't get into lyrics much, we were just enjoying the sonics of the record, so I can definitely relate to what you're talking about.
