I wasn't sure whether Harlem in Havana was for real, or just Joni's interpretation of something kinda like it. I'm into a bit of a looking-backward phase right now and have been watching films made in or about the period between WWII and the 70s or thereabouts and I've seen a few things dealing with human rights issues. I was resisting watching the film "The Help" because sometimes when things seem to be *too* popular, I'm leery of them, but it is a very good film and a bit of an eye-opener for me about what was going on in the American south in the early 60s. I didn't know a lot of that stuff. As well, I recently signed up for Netflix and yesterday watched a documentary called "The Black Power Mixtape." It's a Swedish documentary using footage of interviews done by Swedish TV reports with black power advocates including Angela Davis and Stokely Carmichael. That was another eye-opener for me and I recommend it very highly. Thanks for sharing that, Rob. Happy Thursday right back atcha! >________________________________ > From: Robert Procyk >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2012 1:25:32 AM >Subject: Harlem in Havana > >I am always running behind the times, so forgive me if my dear Wadena Kate may have posted this: I always read my Saskatoon Star-Phoenix a day late, so I just noticed this Harlem in Havana article: >http://www.thestarphoenix.com/life/Harlem+Havana+strong+links+Saskatoon/5965 171/story.html > >Happy Thursday, > >Rob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2012 13:39:59 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: Re: Hejira at Giants stadium She was asked to fill in for Pete Townsend, who opted out at the last minute - thus the "unfortunate" placement in the event. Yes, I thought, and if you were actually willing to LISTEN to her music, too, you would realize that the colors in the chord structures are the foundation of the experience. But of course, she plays in those wacky alternate tunings ... And guess what ... I'm practicing for the 3rd annual Ithaca Community School of Music and Dance Joni Mitchell Tribute Concert, Saturday, February 18! Can't wait ... it's going to be awesome ... more info soon. The lyrics are actually pretty direct, it's just that they have to be truly READ and comprehended - it's not like hearing someone singing "I like big butts and I cannot lie", where there is no thinking required, by the same token you don't need a decoder ring for them either like some of Joni's other songs (DITS comes to mind of course). The first time I heard the song I understood the WORDS, and what they meant logically. Thirty-six years later, I'm STILL absorbing them emotionally as life experience unravels for me which only adds to the power of this song. Perhaps it's the number of metaphors and similes that the song employs, but I think the words are pretty direct - they're just not "common" song lyrics: travel the breadth of extremities comfort in melancholy between the foreceps and the stone white flags of winter chimneys (so good that another record was named for it) a defector from the petty wars that shellshock love away Anyway, you get the point and I'm preaching to the choir. Sue, your love for Joni is very contagious.
