I'm just a big fan that thought they deserved to have a nice looking website, so I'm helping them out since they have no label backing or anything. :) - --- On Fri, 12/16/11, JMDL Digest wrote: From: JMDL Digest Subject: JMDL Digest V2011 #756 To: joni-digest@smoe.org Date: Friday, December 16, 2011, 3:00 AM JMDL Digest Friday, December 16 2011 Volume 2011 : Number 756 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - -------- Music that gets compared to Joni a lot [bill smallwood Subject: Music that gets compared to Joni a lot Hi All! I just wanted to share some music you guys might like. I really dig this English acoustic duo called The Douglas Firs, and as I mentioned before, of all the groups people compare them to, the general consensus is Joni Mitchell. I suppose it's a bit like Tom Waits, in that even if somebody kinda reminds you of him, nobody really sounds quite like him, but still....give it a listen and see what you think. It's just nice music, and you never can have too much of that, can you? http://www.thedouglasfirs.com (you can stream their whole CD right off the Music page, no sample snippets to deal with) Their singer, Suzy, has a very melodious voice. It's just her and Jimmy, the guitarist, so they have a very minimalist acoustic sound on the majority of their songs. If you only have time for one song, my personal favorite is probably "Regrets and Cigarettes", though everyone else seems to prefer "I Don't Want to Go to Bed". Anyway, hope it's ok that I posted this. I just like them a lot and wanted to share with other folks who appreciate the same kind of music. Thanks! It flows so fast that it froze in huge chunks some of which kept moving slowly and pushed up like icebergs... you couldn't skate on it unless you were like the people on that Japanese obstacle course show. Last year when I flew over Lake Michigan in February, a lot of it was frozen like a big mosaic art picture. Very beautiful. And, yes! Those god-awful decorations are not only a thing of the past but still exist in some places... seems they stand up remarkably well if taken care of and stored properly. It doesn't seem possible. (No offense to any Griswalds on the list. Christmas happens to be sparkling out on my neighbor's lawn--and roof.) Second, can a river really freeze? There's some skating on frozen streams in Circle Game, so I must conclude this is not a metaphor. Forgive the ignorance and Cali-centricity. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Dec 2011 09:58:00 -0500 From: Ken Evans Subject: Frozen rivers I would guess everyone knows this, but just in case - you know it's just the top layer of the river that's frozen - underneath it's still a flowing current. If it wasn't then downstream would dry up lol. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Dec 2011 16:14:17 +0000 (GMT) From: Vincenzo Mancini Subject: Furry The Mingus sessions: honey for greedy bears! The 8 piece incarnation of Mutts of the Planet, with Max Bennett himself on bass, performed both albums before a packed audience on Nov 6th at Dizzy's in San Diego. We filmed the whole show and recorded the audio to multitrack for a very fine looking and sounding DVD (94 mins runtime). A reviewer from the paper wrote this wonderful review the next day: http://tinyurl.com/6pn42vl The DVD is multi-region and I am reliably informed will play correctly on European PAL players as well as all North American NTSC players. You can watch excerpts from the show on Youtube http://tinyurl.com/73vgrhb May I suggest that you treat yourself to two of Joni's best loved albums played before your very eyes by "the wild and the gentle dogs kenneled in me": the one and only Mutts. www.robinadler.com/products.html Happy holidays everyone, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Dec 2011 14:58:32 -0500 From: Marianne Rizzo Subject: Joni: "You're my favorite work of art!"
