I've been listening to them for over a year now (found them on Last.fm) and I was really surprised to find that not that many people know about them. You'd think they'd have major label backing from the way they sound, but no, they're indie all the way. They have an EP coming out early next year that I'm really looking forward to. Live versions of some of the songs are already up on YouTube, and they're really good. I particularly love "Home and Dry", which appropriately, they performed at a benefit for an orangization that helps the homeless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6qtEMp2rF8 Enjoy! :) Bill - --- On Mon, 12/12/11, Catherine McKay wrote: From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Music that gets compared to Joni a lot To: "bill smallwood" , "joni@smoe.org" Date: Monday, December 12, 2011, 11:12 PM Thanks for sharing, Bill. I think they're very good. They do sound very good, and I will probably buy their album. I really dig this English acoustic duo called The Douglas Firs, and as I mentioned before, of all the groups people compare them to, the general consensus is Joni Mitchell. I suppose it's a bit like Tom Waits, in that even if somebody kinda reminds you of him, nobody really sounds quite like him, but still....give it a listen and see what you think. It's just nice music, and you never can have too much of that, can you? http://www.thedouglasfirs.com (you can stream their whole CD right off the Music page, no sample snippets to deal with) Their singer, Suzy, has a very melodious voice. It's just her and Jimmy, the guitarist, so they have a very minimalist acoustic sound on the majority of their songs. If you only have time for one song, my personal favorite is probably "Regrets and Cigarettes", though everyone else seems to prefer "I Don't Want to Go to Bed". Anyway, hope it's ok that I posted this. I just like them a lot and wanted to share with other folks who appreciate the same kind of music. Thanks! They had a comedy sketch depicting the singers who performed for the Tears are Not Enough fundraising video. Joni was played by Geri Hall, who did an excellent job being "Joni" in flowing dress with her expressive movements, hands, etc. If you haven't seen the show: http://www.cbc.ca/22minutes/ On the page, there is a Find Us on Facebook block in the right-hand column, where you can watch the sketch, called Beers Are Not Enough.
