[Bob Muller ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 4 Dec 2011 13:41:43 -0600 From: Dan Olson Subject: Re: Perhaps it should be noted that Zawinul died four years ago. I think it is interesting to read about the MIngus sessions from Erskine's point of view. Unlike all of Joni's albums before and since (and for that matter, Weather Report's), the Mingus date was a prototypical "jazz session", in that they weren't allowed weeks to languish over arrangements; musicians were brought in for an afternoon or two, changes in personnel were made on the fly, etc. After reading about how Erskine came up with the concept of playing "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" with brushes prompted a re-listening of that spectacular (if not my favorite) Pastorius writing gem (the horn arrangements) - Erskine's brush work is amazing. ~Dan On Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 9:56 AM, Dave Blackburn wrote: > "We ain't no f...ing L.A Express" - Joe Zawinul. > > A hint of jazz attitude perhaps? > > > > > > > > On Dec 2, 2011, at 7:33 AM, c Karma wrote: > > > Great article! As for funding, and this would apply whether or not we change up how we do business, can we have an entry portal to Amazon.com through jm.com so that Les can get a percentage of the money we spend there? The old site used to do that and I know that Amazon still has that program going on. In that way, those of us who use Amazon anyway can help the JMDL at no extra cost to us. December would be a great time to start...I intend to shop online mostly and I've got a pocket full o' change. I could live with Yahoo or Google, but I keep wondering: why can't we just buy our own server? How much do they cost? It's just an email list -- and possibly www.jonimitchell.com, if Les would want to use it for that. How big would it have to be? We've raised money for things before ... is the cost of a server something that we could all chip in towards? I know that lots of us don't have extra money, but a dollar here, $25 there; it adds up before you know it. I don't know where the server would "live" or who would want to maintain it, but I'm game for this conversation, and for some involvement in exploring this option. Anyone else? I don't remember anyone mentioning this connotation: i.e. that greener pastures means a life of plenty.....that rewards are to come "by & by". I was half watching some movie this morning & that old phrasing came up in the dialogue & a light bulb went off in my head. That Joni had "troubles", but that she would walk green pastures, by & by. That her knowledge of her travels gave into the moment & also of hoping of better outcomes as time passes. There is a surety in her commenting on "walking green pastures, by & by", that the struggle was inevitable, the journey undertaken, but it would be all worthwhile. Just my 2 cents this evening. Btw, Judy Collins new cd is very good. She is in excellent voice & only one song is redundant. She does a killer version of "Pure Imagination" which I had only heard on tv commercials, but fell in love with - I knew it was better than a jingle & was delighted to hear her singing it out of my car stereo. Now I know all about that song, but I had wondered where it came from ( "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory " ) GREETINGS FROM THE TRIPLE M Down a gravel road, where the barb wire meets the sky.
