I could live with Yahoo or Google, but I keep wondering: why can't we just buy our own server? How much do they cost? It's just an email list -- and possibly www.jonimitchell.com, if Les would want to use it for that. How big would it have to be? We've raised money for things before ... is the cost of a server something that we could all chip in towards? I know that lots of us don't have extra money, but a dollar here, $25 there; it adds up before you know it. I don't know where the server would "live" or who would want to maintain it, but I'm game for this conversation, and for some involvement in exploring this option. Anyone else? And lastly, for those that detest NJC messages, you can always choose "no group eMails" and periodically go to the the group's website to read the "only Joni" messages whenever you please if you are not comfortable with adding a "NJC" eMail filter to your eMail options. Here are the Google vs Yahoo pros and cons that came up on my google search YAHOO PROS - - generally more reliable - - can post polls - - member can post to the group calendar - - 200 MB available for group storage (100 MB for attachments and photos, and another 100 MB for files). - - Members can post links of interest on the group site - - Group Owner can designate multiple group managers while limiting certain powers to managers (ie. Can allow several people to approve new group members or delete inappropriate posts or spam but not allow that manager to delete members or delete the entire group which is very important). - - can subscribe to the group's eMail features without a yahoo ID (but not have access to the actual Group website features) B YAHOO CONS - - big flashy banner ads - - message attachments are not stored on the group site (but are delivered via eMail b yahoo uses Norton to scan attachments) - - ads in posts/emails/advert - there is no escaping the adverts on yahoo - - 750kB message size limit - - autoresponder GOOGLE PROS - - Easier to use - - message attachments stored on the group's site with unlimited storage space - - 5MB message size limit - - unobtrusive text adverts GOOGLE CONS - - Everybody needs a google account, or the group must be public - - Google discontinued file storage in Jan. of 2011 - - buggy system - - impossible to moderate posts with attachments or quoted text - in fact the moderation queue is the worst feature of google groups. very little works as it should, very little control, no ability to edit a post before approval, not even your own. - - threads close automatically after 60 days - - autoresponder - - servers can be unresponsive and timeout - - some features don't work with opera browser (page editing, welcome message editing) - - Group owners cannot designate certain powers to managers - it's all or nothing - - message grouping doesn't always work as it should. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Dec 2011 12:02:05 -0600 From: CoyoteRick Subject: Re: the Supremes' "All I Want", TO BROADWAY Chris, that's exactly what I thought.
