Dear All, I agree wholeheartedly, and I found the hissing demos CD that I am most grateful someone from the list burned for me. To me the stand out tracks are Edith, Scarlet, Hissing, and Harry/Centrepiece. Edith is really strange harmonically and that is probably why it is so fascinating . All the Major 9th and 11th chords creating the harmonic tension to go with the disturbing storyline. Scarlet is an epic and I am so grateful for Dave's transcription. I wonder what the motivation or idea behind the song was apart from Gone with the Wind. I remember someone here saying it was about a woman she met on the Bob Dylan tour, but is that consistent with the date it was written and recorded? I wrote that I found Joni's 2 performance gowns in her Court and Spark concert spectacular. So late that night, I did find myself recreating them on the back of the album. When C & S came out it had a bookfold album cover and the black was quite a nice canvas since there were two full size 'pages' on the inside for lots of words. The paper was soft and matte. Perfect. So with a tiny Rapidograph pen and colored pencils I went to work. Of course, the arm was pulled back on the stereo so I could have non-stop Court and Spark behind me. Too bad ... someone borrowed the album years later and when she moved and I moved ... I lost it. I had to buy the album again and by then it came in a glossier paper and had been scaled back to a regular slip case. I no longer had the inspiration of the moment, either. But that's what memories hold safe for us, and that's what the synesthetic magic of music does when in an instant we are sent back into the moment. Susan Leviton ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Nov 2011 13:28:16 -0600 From: Happy The Man Subject: Joni & Steve Jobs There is a section of the book that talks about music on his IPad from March 2011 with Isaacson: ...Then he turned to Joni Mitchell. She had a kid she put up for adoption, he said. This song is about her little girl. He tapped on Little Green, and we listened to the mournful melody and lyrics that describe the feelings of a mother who gives up a child. So you sign all the papers in the family name / Youre sad and youre sorry, but youre not ashamed. I asked whether he still often thought about being put up for adoption. No, not much, he said. Not too often. These days, he said, he thought more about getting older than about his birth. That led him to play Joni Mitchells greatest song, Both Sides Now, with its lyrics about being older and wiser: Ive looked at life from both sides now, / From win and lose, and still somehow, / Its lifes illusions I recall, / I really dont know life at all. As Glenn Gould had done with Bachs Goldberg Variations, Mitchell had recorded Both Sides Now many years apart, first in 1969 and Isaacson, Walter (2011-10-24). Steve Jobs (Kindle Locations 7175-7183). Simon & Schuster. Kindle Edition.
