Things were going poorly between the two of them. Joni claimed that she got into a verbal argument with Browne, whom she felt had dissed her onstage, and that Browne had hit her. I infer that they did not break up immediately. Some time later, Browne interceded in a spat at the Troubadour on behalf of one Phyliis Major, whose boyfriend then threw a punch at Browne. This apparently won the fair maiden's heart (and Browne a trip home with her), and broke Joni's. The Troubador incident with Phyllis Major, which was not a one-night stand, is immortalized in Browne's song "Ready or Not." I saw Joni's concert in February 1972 at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago, with Jackson Browne as the opening act. Never suspected at the time that they were involved with each other. Probably not a good match, when you think about it. Years later, I saw Jackson Browne's concert at Northwestern University during his "Running On Empty" tour, and the opening act was the wonderfully talented Karla Bonoff. Turnabout is fair play, I suppose. I particularly like the photo that everyone has been talking about, which I'd never seen, and an article I'd never read. A good reminder to me to visit the website more often.
