Also the line "looking for an ocean"." This followed Kakki's "What makes it seem possible is the line "where is the lion in you to defy him when you're this weak and this spacey." Crosby is a Leo.On another note, both Crosby and Nash sang backround vocals on a few of the songs on Court & Spark." I had also thought that this was about Crosby, based on some reading (I am not clever enough to make this stuff up) - in my archived mental database I think I recall a story about Joni visiting Crosby when he was in an institution of some sort - rehab or otherwise. However, Sheila Weller, in "Girls Like Us" (a book whose research certainly appears to have been extensive) renders an account on pages 407-409 (paperback) that links Trouble Child to Joni's stay at a "residential think tank for therapists" following her "suicide attempt". The sequence reported in the book is that in late 1972, while Joni was involved with Jackson Browne, she rented an apartment in West Hollywood, on a hilly street between Santa Monica and Sunset. Things were going poorly between the two of them. Joni claimed that she got into a verbal argument with Browne, whom she felt had dissed her onstage, and that Browne had hit her. I infer that they did not break up immediately. Some time later, Browne interceded in a spat at the Troubadour on behalf of one Phyliis Major, whose boyfriend then threw a punch at Browne. This apparently won the fair maiden's heart (and Browne a trip home with her), and broke Joni's. One night after this incident, Joni waited all night at the apartment for Browne to arrive, but he didn't. This led to Joni's "suicide attempt" and the song "Car on a Hill". After the incident, on a recommendation from David Geffen, Joni went to the "think tank", where she got to pick the therapist she wanted. From this experience came the song "Trouble Child". The text is very similar to the one sent out by my own email address a few months ago. Problem is that most likely, at this moment Randy can't read our messages to him, because he has probably lost access to his account, and when he finally gets it back he may even find that he is still not getting incoming messages because they are being diverted to an alternative address set up by the fraudsters. So I am probably writing this message - in addition to the JMDL - to a nasty person reading this in Nigeria! I can give Randy more advice on how to deal with this, but I am reluctant to do this because I won't even know if it is him or the fraudster writing back to me. Even giving personal information is no guarantee, because as long as the fraudster has access to Randy's email he can look up those details, like happened with me! (One of my neighbours almost fell for the scam but asked what he thought was a good way to check if it was really me: "Which artist's songs were covered in the concert you organised last year at our local jazz bar?" And the correct answer came back: "Joni Mitchell"! It is only when the person pretending to be me asked for a payment to Western Union that he smelled a rat! If anyone knows Randy's telephone number, this is the only safe way to make contact. Good luck! In honor of Laura Nyro's birthday tomorrow, I'm sending along this video that appears to only be available today and tomorrow, so if you love her, like her, or are just curious, have a look at this wonderful woman we've lost. She's one of the few artists that Joni always spoke favorably of. I start by thinking of Joni's basic theme which is the waves breaking in the bass rhythm and the guitar run at the end of the chorus ... a natural, uncontrollable force ... Then the lyrics ... Joni lectures the trouble child, a person she clearly loves but is constantly putting themselves in bad situations, probably a drug addict, alcoholic or mentally ill person who seemingly can't get their shit together ... but all the while trying to make them see that they have the power to change ... Then my personal experience ... take last night, coincidentally or not, I spent 5 hours in the emergency room with a friend of mine who was again passed out drunk. My exasperation was spent ... since I spent two weeks earlier in the month visiting her in the hospital psych ward ... I wanted her to get her shit together but I also held her as she wept her eyes out. Trying to deal with a person like this is sometimes like trying to contain plutonium. Well, this song will be my theme for today! I know you and the Mutts (including Max Bennett [how cool is that!]) will do an awesome job with this song! I have my thoughts but I'd love to hear yours. I think it's a fantastic song on so many levels. I'm sure it has been discussed before and maybe you can refer me to a past discussion. My goal, as with all of her songs, is to get inside them as deeply as possible. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Be well my friends, Robin P.S. We had a rehearsal with Max Bennett yesterday. He's quite the character at 83. He's got a great sense of humor, really easy to talk to and a twinkle in his bright blue eyes. A truly lovely man. He said " All I'm dreaming are Joni songs at the moment." I think I detected a hint of a skip in his walk too. What would we do without music eh! ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #297 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
