Hi Michael, But is Joni a brilliant poet or rather a brilliant lyricist? B Here is what Joni has said about poets: B bIbm with Nietzsche on the poets: bThe poet is the vainest of the vain, even before the ugliest of water buffalo does he fan his tail. Ibve looked among them for an honest man and all Ibve dredged up are old godsb heads. He muddies his waters that he might appear deep.b What always bugged me about poetry in school was the artifice of it. When Dylan wrote, 'You've got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend,' as an opening line, the language was direct and undeniable. I love Yeats. As for Plath and Sexton, I'm sorry, but I smell a rat." B http://www.poetrymagazine.com/archives/2000/June-July00/classicpoet6-00.htm This article is pretty good about comparing lyrics and poetry: B http://www.iwritethesongs.com/articles/lyrics_vs_poetry.cfm I tend to think of Joni as both and beyond a poet or lyricist just like she can't be pigeon-holed as just a folk musician. From the New York Times: Dylan Tangled Up in Nobel Prize Speculation By JULIE BOSMAN Predictions for the Nobel Prize in Literature tend to be all over the place, especially in the final hours before the winner is named. But Bob Dylan? On the eve of the announcement of the prize, Ladbrokes, the British bookmaking chain, said that Mr. Dylan, the songwriter and author, had 5:1 odds of winning the Nobel, placing him ahead of Adonis, the Syrian poet; Haruki Murakami, the Japanese novelist; and Peter Nadas, a Hungarian writer. Mr. Dylan has been cited as a contender for the prize before, but he has received an unusual amount of buzz in the last day. However, Ladbrokes and other betting sites are not especially skilled at Nobel laureate predictions. In 2010, Adonis and the Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer topped the lists of possible winners in the days leading up to the announcement. The actual winner b coming relatively out of nowhere b was Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian writer. This yearbs Nobel laureate will be announced by the Swedish Academy at 1 p.m. Stockholm time on Thursday. - --------------------------- Joni often has spoken about the lack of recognition of her work as poetry. I recall an interview in the Netherlands where she spoke about Dylan and Morrison being talked about as poets but not her. Personally I've never been a big Dylan fan so I find this utterly baffling. Best wishes to all. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2011 18:21:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Interviews with Joni's Parents Seems to be a problem with the page. I overheard a mention on an ad that they were going to be covering Joni this week (at least I think it's this week, because it was one of those things I heard in passing.) It's one of those shows along the lines of "The X Factor" or "[Name your nationality] Idol," but with bands competing instead of individuals. The catch is they cover only songs written by Canadians and they don't get to pick the song: it's given to them by the producers (or maybe the judges) of the show. People vote for their favourite and the one with the lowest score is booted off. More info here and, if I watch the show, I'll let you know, but, whether or not I do, you should be able to watch the show and listen to the current week's placelist by going to this website, assuming they don't block listening from other countries: http://www.cbc.ca/covermecanada/ I wonder what song they'll choose and which band will cover it? I'm sure it will be something very well-known - perhaps the millionth cover of "BSN." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2011 20:07:27 -0500 From: Sharon Watkins Subject: Interviews with Joni's Parents The web page below indicates links to audio interviews with Joni's parents.
