I definitely think of Joni as a pianist. She is a fabulous pianist...I adore all her songs that she accompanies on piano, she is very emotive when playing the instrument. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2011 07:50:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Flaherty Subject: Re: Joni as pianist... I bet there are a lot of us whose former roommates abhor Joni's music because they were forced to listen to it ... over and over ... and over again ... back in the day. I don't understand what they have to complain about! Kate b?b 1b.b?b 1b.b?b 1b. And yes, like you I get on kicks where I play Joni over & over. My latest kick is this live version of Shadows & Light with Joni & Jaco. I can't hear it enough lately. I'm entertaining the thought of having my son put it on a disc so I can listen to it when I'm driving as well....lord help anyone that's in the car with me when I'm on these kicks!! This song has become an earworm for me in my time at the computer this afternoon. I'm glad I'm not at work, so I can just sink into the sumptuosness of the experience. Does anyone else play Joni over & over & over & over again, till it feels like blood ? I had a college roommate who complained that I played Joni over & over again & I wasn't even high ! This version is so far superior to the cd version, it makes me want to hear her next cd in this manner. I liked SHINE, don't get me wrong - a more refined take on her DED, but this approach - a mature, philosophical, deeply felt Joni at this stage in her life is what I want to hear. Not that she was ever anything less than all that - but to hear her take on things now, well that's what we all hope for, isn't it ? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2011 09:51:12 -0700 From: "Mark" Subject: Re: Shadows & Light LIVE w/Jaco Laura! Thank you for that link! I could swear I saw actual video of this performance somewhere but maybe I dreamed it. I really think it's an amazing reinvention of the song. Anyway, I was searching for that elusive performance video when I came across this one that I hadn't heard before. The sound isn't the best and again, there is no video of the actual performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SdA_vEJIec Mark in Seattle - -----Original Message----- From: est86mlm@ameritech.net Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2011 9:22 AM To: joni2city@hotmail.com Cc: Joni List Subject: Shadows & Light LIVE w/Jaco Your welcome Mary! As a "single" , I was host seating at a front table!!!! Judy's guitar mic was directly in front of me and about 3 feet away!!!! What a wonderful show. Judy opened with "Someday Soon", my personal favorite as I have a tender spot in my heart for those bad boy cowboys! Judy's voice is still very good. Her stories about Al Kooper introducing her to Joni and BSN, her recnetly finding out the "That song about the Midway" was written about Joni meeting Leonard Cohen at e Newport Folk Festival, and her witty jibes at the government (my guitar may need it's own passport) enlivened that show. Judy interspersed sing-alongs (Cat's in the Cradle and This land is your land), acapella folk tunes, and played piano on one of her new songs. It was Judy on her Martin guitar and Russel Walden on piano. A memorable hour and a half show! PS girlie moment----I want to get my hair done like hers!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2011 18:57:28 +0100 (BST) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: Re: Shadows & Light LIVE - now Joni covering I Heard It Through The Grapevine Thanks very much, Laura and Mark, for the clips you shared. But this one is real, Joni's voice is easy to recognise - it is her more recent, smoky voice. The comment only says 1983-07-24 Wantagh, NY Am I the only one being totally surprised by this? You can almost always score a good seat, whereas if you try to buy more than one ticket, you're outta luck. I'm with you on the hair. If my hair could be like Judy's or Emmylou's, I'd give up on the hair colour. I suppose they do colour theirs though - few people are lucky enough to turn silver like that. >________________________________ >From: Darice >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2011 1:40:22 PM >Subject: Judy Collins (vljc) > >After reading the SF Chron interview with Judy Collins, I immediatley called and scored the LAST ticket for Thurs night. (Although I am aware, of course, that an autobiography written late in life will have some blank spots and interpreted parts as well. Telling it as it was is nearly impossible since memory is an active, ongoing process. But that's no disadvantage. It would be interesting to learn how Joni interprets her life. And that's probably why it won't happen. She has got to keep something for herself). Marion 2011/9/23 > It's never going to be written, I fear.
