(Don't want to sound funny but I still have problems unzipping, so a simple mp3 file is much appreciated. I do know about unzipping programs, have downloaded them before, but my ailing PC does not seem to like them any more...) It sounds to me like Joni wrote this song on purpose in a much more "cowboy" (i.e. country) style than her own usual style. Or could that be Donal Leace's interpretation? I guess we won't know for sure without hearing Joni's original tape recording of it, but my guess is that she intended to write a country song. And what a line-up of musicians playing with Donal! Keith Jarrett! And produced by Roberta Flack, now that's a surprise, I didn't know she had been producing other people. Also thanks to Bob and Richard for the background stories. It makes it all so real and touchable! I feel like there are so many more because Joni's always leaving someone behind or getting left behind. Song for Sharon is not directed at a lover, but it is to a lady left behind by a rock star. So that's my pick. So if Joni's song sounds like it, that's probably the reason. Nilsson also offered an original composition, "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City", also VERY much in the style of Fred's song. Like Joni's, it wasn't used in the film but in his case he did record and release the track on his (superb) album "Harry". A similar story surrounds the theme song to Ghostbusters, the hit by Ray Parker back in the 80's. The director instructed him to compose a song similar to Huey Lewis' "I Want A New Drug" and unfortunately Parker got TOO close to the original. He was sued by Huey and had to pony up some bucks for copying it. Further to Midnight Cowboy, for those who have seen it, I often feel like Ratso Rizzo crossing the streets of Beijing, yelling to the cars, cabs, bikes and scooters "I'm walkin' here! I'm walkin' here!" So far I've only been hit once, by an old guy on a bike going the wrong way. I suffered minimal damage. I'm not a huge Judy fan but I certainly respect her career, and her endurance, especially in light of all that she has gone through. Would that Joni have some of those characteristics. Enjoy the show and I'll look forward to your report Richard. Judy has come to Hugh's Room here in Toronto a few times and I expect she may be back. Hugh's Room is a lovely small venue and I guess partly because of that, the ticket prices to see her were quite steep but, if she comes back this year, I'll consider treating myself. >________________________________ >From: Mark >To: Richard Goldman ; joni@smoe.org >Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2011 8:43:06 PM >Subject: Re: Cover News - Judy Collins > >It looks like Bremerton WA is the closest she will be coming to me.
