That is the first time I have heard the song after having actually been there recently. We were 2 car loads of us on our way to Lesli and Pete's house in Topanga Canyon. Like bees around honey. Sharing in the sweetness we've learned to sing and play from listening to Joni that happened at Our House only a few decades ago. If there ever is a movie about Joni, the leads should be Robin Adler (Joni) and Dave Blackburn (Larry Klein). Nobody is as close to the talent as they are. The movie producer would have it easy. There was a guy walking his big white dog on the side walk up the hill from Our House when we pulled over to ask, "where is Joni Mitchell's old house?" What a nice coincidence to find he lived right next door to Our House!! He told us he thought it is up for rent and is at the end of a long gravel driveway. He gave us his address and said we could park in his driveway. Wow. Nice. We did! The house is set back from the road, and the long gravel driveway isn't so long as we'd imagined. It is partitioned by a big green gate before the part that goes up to the rock walkway and stairs. The spirituality of the creativity and love that occurred there in the 60's makes it holy ground. Who needs drugs? The trees overhead were our witnesses now and from back then. Intoxicating. When the song on Pandora Radio got to the "la la lala la la" part it turned to ha ha haha ha ha" for me. I could see it happening having been there. The fire, vase, flowers, cats, songs, etc. I hope it becomes a museum of a sort someday, open to the public. I'll be the first to go inside. Love, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 17:36:06 +0100 (BST) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: my late Joni(jazz)fest report - and oodles of gratitude Thank goodness I sent a few messages about the Joni's Jazz concert while out in LA. I then promised to write more soon about the whole get-together which turned so beautifully into a full blown Jonifest. But I should have known that, once back in London, I would not find a minute for more posting for quite a while. Even now I should feel guilty about writing this post, because I have so much else shouting at me from the top of my to-do list, but if I don't write this now I will have even worse guilt worms gnawing at my insides for not having said "thank you" to so many lovely people, so I hope I have chosen the least harmful option! Let me take care of the biggest obligation first. The person who persuaded me to take the crazy plunge and sign up, who so graciously offered to be my room mate, the real gentleman "gentaman" Jim Traweek. It's not just this personal favour he did me, but I have been witness to all the other things he quietly and unassumingly did in the background: he put up all the useful and practical databases on our Yahoo group, he brought with him printed-out copies for anyone who needed it, of maps of downtown LA and the route to the Hollywood Bowl, he travelled with a large bag of frozen sausages which he managed to cook and donate half to the after-concert gathering at Paz's suite, and half to Leslie's party (and it was no small feat, working out how to defrost them, keep them fresh, cook them etc!!!), he spent a long time preparing his special potato salad at Leslie's house, he hired a car just to make sure he was no burden on anybody else and gave lifts to all who needed it, etc. For this and everything I have forgotten to mention: many many thanks, Jim! Other people that I owe much gratitude to have already been mentioned in other posts, so I can be rather brief here, but needless to say I appreciate the part they played very much: Julius for getting our concert tickets all together in such a perfect location, and for organising our pre-concert picnic in an equally perfect spot, Kakki for finding the great Far Bar for our Tuesday evening music evening, Paz for getting us such a good deal at the Kyoto hotel and making his suite available for the after-concert gathering, Leslie and Pete for the hospitality at their stunning Topanga Canyon house, Coyote Rick and Brad for the hospitality at their fabulous Hollywood Hills house, Cassy, Cassy again, Phyllis and Kakki for their wonderful gifts to us all (commemorative buttons, flowers, Joni photo-prints and decorated martini glasses respectively!) Of course, as always, it is truly the "whole" of all us JMDLers (or ex- and hopefully soon re- JMDLers!) that makes these gatherings so special. So I won't list all names because I am afraid of missing one out unintentionally, and each of their company was really precious. But it was a special pleasure to get to know a few more "lurkers", or to finally be able to put a face to a name so far only familiar in print. The same goes for the musicians. I have enjoyed every contribution and been stunned, one more time, by the talent and musical sensibilities of our group. And if I may commit the sin of singling out just 2 acts, I feel I need to first of all say "thank you" again to Dave and Robin, for their contribution every single day, from the Mutts concert at the picnic to countless impromptu songs and collaborations at various other moments throughout the days. How lucky we are to have such professional and passionate musicians amongst us... The other act I am picking out is Chris (cc Karma) who played the piano so beautifully at Rick's house. His Paprika Plains was the most incredible "OMG" experience, which left us all standing there with out mouth agape... To experience such crystal beauty is a real blessing. Well I may soon kick myself for having forgotten to mention another obvious contribution, but I hope I have at least given those guilt worms a good bang on the head for the time being. Thank you all for the great memories. I am working through my photos and will be sending some by email to the people concerned, but please be a bit more patient with me! Lieve in London PS Oh yes, I should also thank California for being so beautiful and sticking faithfully to its perfect climate, while the weather in England is throwing another long wet tantrum... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 14:34:53 -0600 (MDT) From: TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com Subject: =?UTF-8?Q?New_Library_item:_Jazz_=C3=A0_la_Jon?= =?UTF-8?Q?i_Mitchell_at_the_Hollywood_Bowl?= Title: Jazz C la Joni Mitchell at the Hollywood Bowl Publication: Los Angeles Sentinel Date: 2011.8.26 http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2412 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 14:41:23 -0600 (MDT) From: TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com Subject: =?UTF-8?Q?New_Library_item:_Joni=E2=80=99s_Jazz?= =?UTF-8?Q?-Photo_Feature_by_Malcolm_Ali?= Title: Jonibs Jazz-Photo Feature by Malcolm Ali Publication: The Scoop LA Date: 2011.8.24 http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2413 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 15:26:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Troubadours and Janet Jackson's BOBW Hi All, I watched the "Troubadours" film yesterday while at the beach as Irene's rain kept us indoors all day. I really dug it, and how cool to watch it a week after getting the Hollywood Blvd/Laurel Canyon tour courtesy of the generous Mr. Dulson and Michelle. Mostly about Carole King and JT (both of whom I love so no problem) but featuring quite a bit of JC and other great musicians too. Two thumbs up and highly recommended. Also, due to a couple of requests, I'm re-sending a link to Janet Jackson's sweet cover of "Beat Of Black Wings", this time in a lossless wav format so it's just as it is on the CD. He seems eager and ready to tell all, so, at the risk of sounding like a Rupert Murdoch subsidiary, there should be a tell-all interview posting next week. I have an invitation out to Larry Carlton also, but no reply as yet. As there is no footage of the early 70's Joni studio sessions these witnesses are what we have left to reveal about how those great records were made and who felt what about whom, and who has forgiven and forgotten! A standing ovation that went and went, and a sense that we had actually nailed a good percentage of the layers of texture inherent in Joni's compositions.
