My friend Alysia and I drove down from Eureka and Sacramento for one night to see Joni's Jazz. Jim was kind enough to invite us to picnic with the JMDL crew at the Hollywood Bowl. Well, I was excited for the Mutts of the Planet, but Alysia was disappointed at first. They were so good, she thought Robin was just lipsynching. We were already drunk on travel, so we proceeded to get high on alcohol, specifically a cheap pink rose. We pinned on buttons, chatted with a bunch of people, sang along to Dreamland when the batteries went out on the sound system, and enjoyed the lovely weather. Then it was time to head uphill to the concert. Hollywood Bowl is a fantastic venue. We were near a big screen in the back, cozy with our neighbors and warm until the temperature dropped and the alcohol wore off late in the show. Going in, I was not a fan of any of the singers, but I knew almost all of the musicians. Brian Blade was positively glowing, especially when he introduced the second half of the show while holding HOSL and displaying that beautiful centerfold. Did he play guitar early on, or was I hallucinating? Herbie Hancock was full of his usual charisma, but only played a few sparkling solos. I was really impressed with Jon Cowherd on piano. Wayne Shorter was great, as expected. Tom Scott won me over. I had thought of him as a lite jazz hack, but he really is talented. Aimee Mann did look terrified. I think she loosened up later in the show and did good renditions of Hissing and Scarlett. Her interviews in the preceding week had worried me. She said that she had just started learning the songs and that the keys had to be dropped a few steps below the original versions. Well, it takes a long time to absorb Joni's work--years, not weeks--and range is the least of the difficulties in singing her songs, especially for a pop singer. Jazz singers tend to have much greater flexibility and control, so Kurt Elling could probably handle a short lead time. His performance was technically very good; I just didn't hear much depth. The appendage of Blackbird to Black Crow was odd. It made me wonder why we didn't get Centerpiece with Harry's House. Chaka Khan played the diva role we expect from her, costume changes and all. I really enjoyed most of her songs, even if she did screw up or just not sing certain lyrics. I knew Cassandra Wilson had a long history of listening to and singing Joni's songs, and she delivered with real feeling. Alysia teared up at Hejira and I got misty during Blue Motel Room. Glen Hansard only sang three songs, but did an amazing job with all of them. He started and ended the show, if you don't count Aimee's stiff Court & Spark opener. Glen's holy guitar made wonderful sounds. At first I was surprised that he didn't regenderize Coyote, but through the show, I realized that it would be a very faithful recreation of the songs. (Cassandra Wilson sang "Tell 'em you've got Joni" in BMR.) Shadows and Light was a perfect ending. After the show, we became part of a human herd and eventually made our way out of the stacked parking nightmare to a friend's pied-a-terre. We wanted to go to the Kyoto to party with everyone, but we were exhausted and had to drive home the next morning. Alysia was mad at me because I hadn't told her there would be an opportunity to jam and she hadn't brought any instruments. She's a self-described "jam slut and fiddle whore" who aspires to be the Wayne Shorter of viola. I had asked her to come to the concert with me because I thought she would appreciate the musicians. I didn't realize she was such a big fan of Joni, but she knew all the words during our 13 hours in the car together. She's planning to play in a tribute show later this summer, too. Apparently she thought she started listening to Hits & Misses in college, like I did. Her dad informed her that he had all of Joni's records and played them constantly when she was little. So I chose the right companion. Thanks for the entertainment! I'm sure Robin feels the same way as she does. But I'm also fairly certain that Robin would express it a bit differently. I loved Sue's vid that she posted on youtube of you Mutts doing EATKP. I wanted to hear (and see) the rest of Harry's House, though! Rose, you and your friend Alysia need to get 'Safaris to the Heart'. It's a whole cd's worth of the best Joni Mitchell covers you're likely to hear. It was a pleasure meeting you guys and I was sorry yall couldn't stay longer and get more acquainted with the neatest bunch of friends on the planet (not just "Mutt's Planet" - lol). It was my first time to hear Robin live and in addition to her being awesome along with Dave and the band, it was a lifetime experience getting to know them a little along with others. The concert was unbelievable but it would have been worth the trip just to go to the Tue. nite jam, or the wonderful party Thur. at Pete and Lesli's, or the Friday nite BBQ at Rick and Brad's (don't ever miss an invite to these guys' parties - Steve and Michelle are proof of that. I haven't even had a chance to upload my photos I took or send any eMails due to roof repairs on my house and work but going to an event like this is much more important than minor life details like that. I'll try to name names later but all of you guys are the best. Thanks for such a great time in LA. And my heart goes out to Patti. You are loved dearly and all I can do is repeat Fra Giovonni when he says, I salute you. I am your friend and my love for you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you which you have not got. But there is much, very much, that while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in today. Take heaven! No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present little instance. Take peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. Take joy! Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty . . . that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim it, that is all! . . . And so I greet you, with profound esteem and with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks and the shadows flee away. "Letter to a Friend" by Fra Giovanni, 1513 Patti, it was great meeting you and I love you dearly. My best to you during this time of hardship. Hugs and more, Jim PS. Thanks Lieve, you're the best roommate a person could ask for. I had a blast. No more name dropping but I love you all. ________________________________ From: Rose McGovern To: JMDL Sent: Friday, August 26, 2011 1:48 PM Subject: Joni's Jazz Hello all, I've been on the list for a few months.
