A comment in this review, sent by the website last week baffles me. The reviewer says: "Aimee Mann comes closest to resembling Joni Mitchell in voice and appearance, which is probably an unfair comparison, akin to the trumpeters who assume the Miles Davis chair in re-creations of his bands." Blonde hair aside, I don't really see any comparison between Joni's singing and Aimee's. Even Joni's later more smoking-patina'd voice has more variation than Aimee's. I really love Aimee Mann but I think it's just too easy for reviewers to compare blonde singer/songwriters to Joni. I also think it's unfair to think that just because she looks like Joni she is going to get up there and tackle these songs like a jazz singer or just like Joni. She sang the songs like Aimee Mann ... and did a journey man's job of it. She was just up against some serious heavy weights, IMHO. There were a number of artists in the first Joni's Jazz in NYC who sounded much worse than her, e.g., Jane Siberry. What a doofus!" She also said she had to catch the tour bus to San Francisco leaving that night so missed the last curtain bow and was disappointed at that. A less comparable singer to Joni would be hard to imagine. Like you say, apart from the blond hair, there's really nothing common when it comes to interpretive skills, vocal agility, good pitch, emotional connection to the music, connection to the band she's playing with, etc. Dave On Aug 25, 2011, at 11:27 AM, Susan Tierney McNamara wrote: > A lot of people have had mixed reviews of Aimee Mann's performance at Joni's Jazz last week. Went to speak with him afterwards (after Marianne Faithful left with a kiss on the lips) and asked him whether he wasn't too jetlagged after playing the Bowl last week, so we got talking about JMDL. Brian said it was very tough to pick songs from Joni's body of work for that show, and he hoped he had given you guys some pleasure. I would like to share with you some of the comments I wrote yesterday when I uploaded my homemade Black Dub dvd from july on dimeadozen. I really wanted Brian to know what I had experienced. He was delighted and thanked me profusely, what a nice and humble man! "I was the 1st in line so i chose my angle carefully to include MANY shots of the "beautiful" Brian Blade (as Joni Mitchell calls him in her 98 dvd). Don't take me wrong, Daniel Lanois and Trixie are terrific, no complaints about Jim either, but Brian was JAW DROPPING for me. I have seen and heard many great jazz drummers, but never one who did such a SYNTHESIS of jazz while playing a "rock" gig. I mean for instance Charlie Watts or Billy Cobham play jazz or jazz/rock with their respective rock bands IMO, but Brian Blade plays rock while integrating his jazz licks inside. Incredible! The standing ovation he got was phenomenal. I think that when you see how Brian does it you will agree that he is the key to Black Dub, and probably the best drummer at present. He set a new standard of excellence that evening by which I will judge all drummers from now on!" I think Brian is a fantastic jazz drummer when he plays his own music. But when he plays other people's music he has a unique talent to shine and bring out the best in them while not stepping on anyone.
