Dave and others have described much of it so very well. It was beyond sweet and wonderful for me and I'm already missing everyone so much! When Glen Hansard (who all us girls have already claimed as our new boyfriend ;-) first came on he told a story about how he and his girlfriend had hiked up to the landmark Hollywood sign earlier in the day. When they approached the big "H" letter in the sign and touched it, alarms started going off and then they started hearing police sirens. Next a police helicopter started hovering overhead and they ran as fast as they could to get out of there. As they got to the road a coyote appeared! This was his intro to the song Coyote. Now it could all have been a great yarn, but the fact is it could have really happened exactly they way he described it and that made it all the better. Only in L.A.! What a great week! Everything went off pretty much without a hitch and without any major incidents or hospitalizations ;-) We are stardust, we are golden. Many thanks to Julius who arranged and secured the huge section of group seat tickets and the prime picnic venue, to Paz who secured an incredible deal on rooms for people at a top hotel, to Lesli and Pete and to Rick and Brad for hosting two absolutely gorgeous parties for the group, to Roch and Steve D. for shuttling so many people to and fro the airport, parties and tour excursions, to Jim T. for setting up our Yahoo group and providing ongoing valuable information for everyone throughout, to Cassy for the amazing JJ pins, and to Dave and Robin who provided such beautiful and outstanding music for us every day. Most of all I am so happy that so many of you longtime and new friends could join us in L.A. Thank you all for being there. You too contributed to the success of the week. It was our pleasure to host the BBQ. Our house was built for music, food, drink and friends. You JMDLers delivered. Bradley and I have enjoyed the pictures y'all have shared immensely. It was terrific to see so many old friends and make even more new ones. I agree that nothing more can be said from my shop either about that amazing concert. It far exceeded my highest expectations. Aimee? Well, she did a heck of a lot better than I could have and I loved her glasses. She should have taken a bow. Les, congrats and thanks to your crack staff for getting those reviews posted on the site almost before the sun rose. For once, I think those paid to render an opinion collectively did the night fair justice. OK, off to the mothership for me. True to form I did not get much sleep especially towards the end of the week. It was a blast to see everyone and enjoyed playing with everybody as always its about the music. I loved the Far Bar and the party was in full swing by the time I got there. Thanks to Dave for lugging PA and stuff around for everyone to use. Kakki the Far Bar was off the hook! Really a JMDL kinda joint! Not as cool as Atty May's but.... This was the earliest night that I had as the next night after the show it started getting really good. The show it self was stunning! I really enjoyed every part of it and not as judgmental on Aimee as others as I know my limitations musically as well as the nerves et al so I just breathed it all in with everything else and it was a sublime evening. I got VIP status thanks to Julius and was in the front row center of our group and felt like a rock star in between Kakki and Ashara and Les. The highlights for me were Greg like everyone else and Jon Cowherd who did a fantastic job with the piano and arrangements with Brian. It is his BD today so yesterday I sent him wishes on FB and commented about the show and of course told him about our parties. I asked if it is coming on DVD/CD and he responded that he is not sure on that he hopes that it could happen again. I was reading back in his older posts and found this that really made me laugh. "Herbie is destroying, mangling my arrangement of the Hissing of Summer Lawns. (had to tweet that!)" Anyways I look forward to seeing Brian at ACL in Austin and talking to him about the show. He will be there with Black Dub (check them out! Great stuff) After the show it was scary having so many loud talented people on the top floor of the hotel and I knew I had neighbors right next door. My theory is they were out for the evening really late or they sleep like the dead, or they were dead cause they did not make a peep about the party that went into the wee hours. Thanks to Jim for the boudin from Louisiana and for hooking us with liquor delivery etc. Always on the ball when it comes to organizing. The next day at Pete and Lesli welcomed us into their wonderful home where I am so happy with all the wonderful toys and the great company and views. I managed to tear myself away from the toys and help in the kitchen for a while, but after that the next thing I knew it once again was 3 am and we still had 100's of songs to play. CC KArma showed up late in the evening and wowed the amateur piano players with how it is REALLY done. What a great guy and it was wonderful to see you Chris! After lots of really fun jams I just collapsed. I literally went from the piano to a sofa 5 ft away and fell into the arms of Morpheus for a few hours. The next morning I woke up and had morning rituals with lovely Jody and Lesli tell the rest of the "boarders were still slumbering under crisp white sheets of curfew", when we rolled down the hill to have food and then prepare for the next evenings party. Thanks so much Leslie and Pete I treasure our friendship and love hanging there. Chez Alegre is even more beautiful than the last time I was there for the Silver Slipper Party (seems like ages ago) and once again the boys went totally off the charts for a wonderful party. We got there at 6:30 ish and the next thing I knew it was 2 am and I freaked out as I had a 4:30am pick up for the airport. Images of Sue are coming back to me now of her swimming in the blue pools and looking like the Hissing of Summer Lawns cover. The food was sublime and the company beyond compare and once again got to play on their piano which is an AMAZING piano!!!! And got to play for Sherelle to sing and then got to hear the piano really played well when CC karma wOwed us with Paprika Plains and other Joni piano gems. Thanks so much to Brad and Rick for their hospitality and friendship. Alas it came to an end again and I got felt the distant feeling of emptiness as we said our good byes and tons of hugs and re-hugging. I pulled out of the Cactus Tree Motel (er Kyoto Grand) at 4:30 am and made my plane to Boise. You would think I would have had sense enough to go back to my hotel and sleep that night but NO, I went out with some of my friends from the dance company and drank some more gin that is made in a distillery right there next to the hotel. OOOOO and blue cheese and spicy garlic olives. YUM! On September 1 I begin a 3 month hiatus from the bathtub gin and all alcohol as I am going to be on the wagon and trying a new diet to see if I can lose some pounds and feel better. It is the blood type diet and will require me to eat certain food types and avoid others. It also requires avoiding alcohol so here I go. If I come to your town this fall there will be no martini parties for me so don't even tempt me. Thanks so much to Julius for starting this whole mess! Thanks to Gayle for putting up with all of us for the week! Thanks Mutts for a great show! Thanks to my pal Cassy and Brad for the trinkets and the flowers and the good vides we felt from your way. We missed you! Thanks to everyone who came. It is such an honor to be friends with all of you. I am closer to you guys than any friends on the planet. Be well and prosper one and all. Happy 100 to Bill Anderson today. How much the world has changed through your eyes, sir! Imagine a world with only wired telecommunications...limited motor transport, virtually no airplanes and news of the world that arrives weeks later. General store merchants like you helped build the western regions of your nation, and grew its great cities. Your legacy thrives in the promise and potential of your reclaimed grand-daughter and great-grandchildren, as well as the humanity and artistic output of your wonderful daughter...truly your greatest creation. I have wanted to thank you for the advice you gave me when we met in Saskatoon. After telling me that Joni had been offered "a LOT of money" for her self portrait after VanGogh, when I asked you how you had encouraged young Roberta Joan in her drawing. You answered simply, "Just keep buying pencils." Parenting is constancy AND consistency, loving and proud. I found that all in what you said. You have made this world a better place, for sure. I'm lagging behind with mine because everyone has described the festivities so well I don't know what to add. As an Aquarian water sign, I didn't mind missing out on two events during the visit: 1) The Ladies of the Canyon tour up to "Our House" because I really needed to go to the beach and jump in the Pacific (just so I could say I did) - - thanks to my great friends Julius and Gail for taking me to the beach, I loved it!!! 2) Also, as Paz said, I knew about the pool at Brad and Ricks so I brought my bathing suit and couldn't wait to jump in. While I was dreaming of the blue pool, there was an amazing jam going on above me with Robin, Dave and Kay pumpin some reggae with the whole party singing along. I then joined Brad, Kelly and Jim in the hot tub ... Jim regaled us with some risqui stories of former hot tub rendezvous!!! HAHA Jim you were a scream!! Oh and then Ed joined us, too. Jimmy and Ed selfishly stayed at Chez Alegre all week (wouldn't you?) and I didn't see enough of them ... :) So I did get to play a couple of songs, but mostly I just had fun!!! :) Oh well back to reality. It is always good to see old friends and make new ones. We have some "outsiders" coming and I think they are brave to come to something their friends have talked about but for which they do not - yet - have a passion. I think, as with 2008 Fest we will be playing lots of other music as well as Joni and whilst I do not think we will get to record it this time - just too much involved - I hope everyone will enjoy it, and perhaps some video phone stuff might find its way onto You Tube - you never know! I cannot believe that it is 8 years since I went to my first Fest at Full Moon and delight so in the friendships I have made through this wonderful list. I will never forget the fleshing out of all those e-mail addresses and posts into real people and how great it was to see everyone. I remember so much warmth and happiness, being part of something that was more than the sum of its constituent parts. There is something organic about the JMDL gatherings - they seem to have a life of their own and take superb turns and twists. - I will never forget the 3 and half hour song game at French Fest. - When "my" team beat Muller and Ashara's team (that will see if they are reading - tee hee). I have heard some extraordinary performances, laughed harder than I could ever imagine and found myself suddenly moved to tears by connections and thoughts. JMDLers have become people I love to spend time with and time is a precious commodity and I do not waste it. I am so aware that I am about to spend 4 days with lovely people and at the end of it I will feel exhausted from working but also elated that it has all happened and then crushingly sad that it is all over. PFB - Post Fest blues should be a recognised condition.. I wish i could have come to the LA FESt but time and money were against me - maybe another time.. I still lurk on here and lurk on FB too and read when I have time to do so. right - I have to get on with some cooking now so that when we have our buffet supper tomorrow night we actually have something to eat! Many best wishes and all good things and thank you all for being the wonderful and FAB people that you are Lucy - -----Original Message----- From: JMDL Digest Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 8:00 AM To: joni-digest@smoe.org Subject: JMDL Digest V2011 #245 JMDL Digest Wednesday, August 24 2011 Volume 2011 : Number 245 Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2011 07:52:02 -0400 From: Marianne Rizzo Subject: LA JoniFEst 2011 Dave, Thank you so much for those pictures and thank you to every one else who shared/ are still sharing pictures and stories . . I had met in person only Ashara, Kate Bennett, Bob Muller (who also met Becky at his house), Dave, and Robin in the flesh, so it was especially gratifying to meet so many people I felt like I already knew but had never met in person. (Other than those folks I have met only Mags-when I was at a conference in Winnipeg-and (rest his sweet soul) Bob Murphy, the same summer that I lived in Boston when I also met Ashara. Becky is often regaled with tales from the jonilist; she described herself as a tag-along and not an obsessive Joni fan, but as she revealed to Les, her first music book was "The Music of Joni Mitchell" with the "Clouds" cover. And yes, she can play guitar and sing, even has done so in public. Alas, the guitar I bought for her awaits her return. And for a casual Joni fan, she know the lyrics and melodies to a whole lot of songs, I'd say. So-not really a tag-along. We had West Coast friends to see, so we had to absent ourselves from a few activities, but everything was so much fun-playing with and listening to all of you talented people was a gas and a half. The concert at the Hollywood Bowl was, as others have said, stunning-and some of the flaws, such as Aimee Mann's generally flat performance ultimately mattered less, given the context of the whole evening. (I am a fan of much of Mann's original work and even follow her on Twitter; she was terrified, but her absence at the curtain call was due to her having to get on her bus to travel to a gig, not shame, embarrassment, or pique.) Everybody has commented on how amazing Glen Hansard was and they do not exaggerate. I am a Hansard fan, but I was skeptical about this project. Was I ever wrong. Since I am a slide player, the great Greg Leisz was the highlight instrumentalist for me. (I am so not worthy!) Anyway, both of us were incredibly moved by the performances. HOSL is a record I love musically, but have had some problems with lyrically in the past-all misgivings melted away with this performance, parts of which transcended Joni's own performances to a significant degree: "Shadows and Light" being exhibits Alpha and Omega. My biggest regret is not getting to jam with the Les, Kay, Sue and others more. But Mr. Pazand Lesli and Pete's incredible set-up were irresistibly appealing to my inner rock-star. And I'm a sucker for a grand piano, too. Paz and Pete, I'll jam with you whenever we might meet again. Rick and Brad's party looked fabulous, but my dearest friend from grad school, Aldon and his wife Anna could not be neglected-as Anna said, we are more like family. And as it turned out, the West Coast reunion of the core of the Bad Tenors Blues Band, was a one-time event-perhaps not as significant as Joni's Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl, but equally gratifying: http://heatstrings.blogspot.com/2011/08/bad-tenors-back-to-school-west-coast .html All you JDMLers are fab!
