Last night I went to see Austra playing live. They ended the show with a cover of Woodstock which I did not expect. I felt like the only person in the room who knew the song (although that can't be true;-) It seemed like a natural song for them to choose. It is the b-side on the single Lose It. Here is a version i found on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLjYpSc_63s Last week was Dublin's pride parade. At the after parade rally there was music, performance, and politics. Gloria, the Dublin lesbian and gay choir, performed BYT. It was a great singalong. GARRET. I was wondering if any of you have seen this movie and what you thought of it. Mark in Seattle Dear Mark, Just saw it at my favorite movie theatre, The Grand Cinema in Tacoma. I like the film, but I thought it a bit long. I found the nature photos moving, but I think he spent too long on them. I got the point & even though I like to get lost in films & spend time in whatever frame the director chooses, I think he just kept making the same point over & over just to make sure I didn't miss his visual references. Obviously that was Malick's intention; I read that he has an 8 hour version of this film. I think that is too long. The film really worked when he spent time with the family and the acting was intense. Some say he questions the divine, but I think he is making a case for divinity - in all things, in nature as well as the mind of man. Side note: Does anyone else remember the neighborhood mosquito fogger ? I was a little girl in the 50's & I remember we always used to follow the DDT fogger around. Thanks to a rave review in the LA Times, I recently bought Rob Young's book "Electric Eden - Unearthing Britain's Visionary Music. Unfortunately, I can't find the review, but there is an interview with Young here: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/books/la-et-robyoung-20110607,0,5636232.story It's a VERY interesting book, especially if you grew up with the music of Fairport, Steeleye, Pentangle et al. It is by turns very deep musicology and amazing connect- the-dots history. Basically, it seems almost everybody played with everybody, except Danny Thompson who really DID play with everybody. If I attempt to synthesize the author's basic premise, I guess I'd say that all these musicians were creating music to convey a yearning for a time and place that probably never existed and never would exist. Despite the "British" in the book's subtitle, it really is about English music, with only a few Scots, and a couple of Irish and Welsh folks showing up. So, as this isn't a NJC post, Joni must show up, right? Right! Pentangle had at "the Laurel Canyon Home of Warner Brothers chief Mo Ostin...a drunken brunch with Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Phil Ochs and Randy Newman." There is a mention of a "tearfully defiant Joni Mitchell" at the Isle of Wight festival and a tidbit that Dave Cousins of Strawbs was much in demand "as an accompanist to visiting American artists like Joni Mitchell..." The phrase "back to the garden" occurs several times, with and without attribution. Fascinating book, some of it WAY over my head, and the author kinda goes into outer space at the end - on board Steeleye's Rocket Cottage, naturally. Well worth a read if you are/were a fan of English folk rock. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA FAR-West (Folk Alliance Region - West) tinkersown@ca.rr.com www.far-west.org ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #186 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
