I'm so excited and amazed to hear that the top female singer was Joni and the most popular female track was A Case of You! The presenters were very surprised by this, although Kirsty Young said she was pleased. Hopefully, the lists will appear on the web site soon. We have a programme called Desert Island Discs on BBC Raio 4, where usually famous folk choose the 8 records they'd take with them if they were on a desert island. The programme have put it out to us ordinary folk to choose our 8 discs and they have been swamped. The team expected a song by Maria Callas or Aretha Franklin or Barbara Streisand to to be the overall top choice of the women in the UK and were amazed that it the number one song is A Case Of You and Joni is the number one artist, above all the others. The prgramme is still on, so I am going back to it and finish my breakfast. This is a wonderful confirmation of Joni! I am just having a family get-together (for my youngest son's birthday) and will make sure I tell everyone about it! By the way, Joni was "top female artist", not top oveerall artist. Still, a great result in this poll, I think. (Also, as I have always been a fan of Radio 4 and have defended it here a few times, can I just say that it confirms what a good lot the Radio 4 audience is!) Lieve in London PS They have just revealed who the top 3 chosen artists are: 1) Beatles 2) Bob Dylan 3) Beethoven. More details will appear on their website soon. ________________________________ From: Anita G To: jonipeople LIST Sent: Saturday, 11 June 2011, 9:54 Subject: Joni Number 1 Artist and Song For Women, UK Desert Island Discs I nearly choked on my cornflakes a couple of minutes ago. I only knew Joi's BYT and actually didn't think much of it. My brother gave me Blue for Christmas 1971 ... I played it around 1 in the morning on Christmas Day and remember the experience like it was yesterday. The music swept over me immediately. I caught up quickly with her other albums (except STAS for some reason) and never missed purchasing every one of her subsequent records within days of release. I got a sneak preview of FTR on a college radio and remember calling them to tell them the recording would be titled Asylum (I read something about it's release and mixed up the album title with the label name - hey it was a new label ... and given the nature of Blue her association with JT - this wasn't to much of a stretch). My brother,(not really a Joni fan but thought I'd like it), later told me that he considered giving me one of two artists - Joni or Melanie. At the time I enjoyed Melanie, but am so grateful for his choice. I also remember listening to Hejira, and Miles of Aisles for the first time - but that's because these were planned events and I prepared for the listen (wine opened, telephone off the hook etc.). The only other album I remember my first time listening to was the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions. Put it on and knew from the opening vocals that I was about to hear something special. So I paused it - got the lighting right, grabbed a beer, laid on my couch and savored every perfect moment in this recording. . - -----Original Message----- From: onlyJMDL Digest To: onlyjoni-digest Sent: Fri, Jun 10, 2011 3:02 am Subject: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #161 onlyJMDL Digest Friday, June 10 2011 Volume 2011 : Number 161 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - ------- Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #160 [Maggie McNally ] Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #160 [Maggie McNally ] Where I First Heard Albums or Songs [Don ] RE: Albums or songs that you never forget when you heard [jlamadoo@sbcglo] Woman Who Rock + Facebook + Joni Mitchell [est86mlm@ameritech.net] HOSL vs. Hejira vs. DJRD; oh, and Mika/Joni reference [Walt Breen ubject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #160 Gosh, but it is great to read about all these memorable albums. I have many LP vinyl records that I still play. Since they are not dusty, they till sound (mostly) like new. I had so many albums that I decided not to try o replace every one with a CD. If you want to, you can still listen to ecords. One thing about listening to records is that you don't have to commit o listening for 45 minutes, just for one side at a time.
