I got a recording of a Joni Mitchell concert and I would like to know when and where it was. It seems to be a small audiance and she's playing Marcie, Dr Junk and there is a mixed version of Circle Game with Little Green. Little Green seems to be very new, because it's quite different from the album version. What a treat. I always assumed Scorsese filmed the whole concert and that Joni's other songs existed in some vault somewhere. I always hoped that the complete concert might one day be officially released on DVD or BluRay. These clips were shot in SD and black and white, filmed from the side of the theatre and on a tripod. Not sure if it's film or video. I assume the camera person was part of Scorsese's crew. I could watch Joni tune her guitar for days! Such beautiful chords as she tuned up for Coyote! The guitar version of Shadows and Light sounded almost sultry and bluesy--much better than the farting synthesizer of the recorded version. If anyone has more info about these versions of the songs, I would love to know. BTW: Can these clips be downloaded? I tried, but failed. I assume Wolfgang charges money for these clips. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 May 2011 10:00:44 -0400 From: James Leahy Subject: Re: May 4 1970 Thanks for remembering, Steve, and for making me remember: I went to New York City that weekend. My friend Rob and I had taken the bus (the bus!) from Toronto to see the Mothers of Invention at the Fillmore East. Rob was really into recording concerts with his portable Uher reel-to-reel and recorded the whole concert (among other things, he also recorded several years of Mariposa concerts back in the late 60s and early 70s, including Joni's performances--too bad we're not in contact anymore). I remember New York being a chaotic, messy, and highly charged city that weekend (but wasn't it always back then?). We hung out for a while at a student lounge at NYU. The atmosphere was electric. At the box office to pick up our tickets, a drug dealer threatened my life. Before the show started, they announced that there was a bomb scare and we all had to stand up and look under our seats for bombs. We all thought it was cool and fun! After the show, Rob and I tried to get backstage to meet Mr Zappa, but were unsucccessful. Rob wanted Frank to know about the then-unknown Jean-Luc Ponty and left a tape for him. I remember all the stores in Times Square selling clothes that featured the 'Stars and Stripes': everything was red, white, and blue. To while away some time, I ducked into a movie theatre to see something called "Hi Mom" directed by a guy named Brian De Palma and starring an unknown actor called Robert De Niro. The movie involved a lengthy scene in which audience members at an avant-garde theatre event were led through an abandoned factory and subjected to humiliation and abuse. Ahhh, the good old days, eh? It was nice to be so young and impervious to stress. We seemed to take all the change and upheaval for granted. My nervous system could never handle that much stimulation today. That's a fairly common show so maybe someone else will beat me to it. I don't get back home until late July/early August.
