Recently, one Jim Yulman uploaded to the chronology some photos he took back in 1969 in Connecticut. One in particular caught my eye, isolated here at this link: http://jonimitchell.com/19690427.jpg This photo is pretty amazing. Try to find a dozen people who are not completely enraptured by this performance... The old guy walking up the steps doesn't look like he's much into it. And the guy in the front row, far left. But other than that, the audience is riveted. Love the paisley dress. Thanks for the note and a great vehicle to share the photos. Bob NP: Rickie Lee Jones, "Jolie Jolie" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 May 2011 19:27:35 -0700 From: Subject: Arthur Lee and Gene Clark Bands record party (no Joni but Laurel Canyon related) For you Arthur Lee and Byrds fans (and those two groups are in my top 10 of all time), I had an overflow of those "once in a blue moon" musical moments the other night at the Roxy Theatre. High Moon Records had a party there launching the first ever release of Arthur Lee's 1973 Black Beauty album and the reissue of the long out of print 1977 Gene Clark band's Two Sides to Every Story album. It was all beyond fantastic. The original Black Beauty band members performed the album along the amazing Valerie Davis on vocals and Bernard Liliton on keyboards. Arthur Lee's widow, Diane spoke along with one of Arthur's former manager who called him "the Picasso of song" and "ahead of his time." Yes indeed. Gene Clark's son, Kai, is a truly incredible musician himself and performed the Two Sides album with his bandmates and the original Gene Clark bandmates, Chip Douglas (ex-Turtles and Monkees producer), Bill Rinehart (ex-Leaves) and Joel Larson (ex-Grass Roots and more). Chip was also a member of the Modern Folk Quartet with our favorite Henry Diltz, and Henry also joined in on harmonica, banjo and tamborine. After performing the songs on the album they then blew out the place performing the Byrds' Feel A Whole Lot Better, Mr. Tambourine Man and Eight Miles High! OMG, I was literally dancing and bouncing off the walls through those three. So were most everyone. It was so cute, even Henry Diltz couldn't help but snap photos of everyone on a small digital camera from the stage at that point. The record company handed out samplers of both albums to us and the music on both is wonderful, beautifully re-mastered and probably a bit unlike what you might expect from both artists. Black Beauty has reggae, blues/funk/soul and a WHOLE lot of what absolutely sounds like Jimi Hendrix. I can see why Paul thought Hendrix played on it. Two Sides also covers a wide range of styles on beautifully crafted songs. I've always heard the post-Byrds Gene Clark music described as "country rock, alternative country," etc. but I hear him more as just a great, original American balladeer. While there are some minor country elements, I found some of his songs very Jimmy Webb/ Stephen Stills-ish and a couple even have a touch of early Joni. I invited my friend Virginia to come with me to the party. She grew up literally off Sunset in the heart of Hollywood. There were probably no more than 100 people in the Roxy and as it turned out most every one of them were notable in their own right, either as close friends and collaborators of Arthur and Gene and/or musicians and prodcuers in their own right. It was a very special group of people and we seemed to be rather popular with them - maybe because we were "new" and they didn't know us back in the day ;-) At any rate, they all insisted we come to the after-party with them at the private On The Rox club upstairs. Lucky Girls! They set up a stage there and the musicians kept playing and jamming on late into the night. What was kind of funny is that they mostly performed a lot of Beatles and other well-known oldies - exactly how we usually end up the night at Jonifests! I even grabbed a mic for a minute LOL! I've posted photos of the night on Facebook. If anyone not there wants to see them, let me know and I'll send another link.
