On first listen I was convinced that Hendrix was playing on a few of the tracks - in particular 'Midnight Sun' and this one 'You're Just A Product Of The Times' - listen @ http://blip.fm/~145kao Doing a search to try and find out if he was, I found that 'Black Beauty' was the name of Jimi's favourite black strat - see http://bit.ly/mMzaHS I haven't been able to find any evidence that Jimi did actually play with Arthur on any of Love's 'Black Beauty' album (looks like the lead guitar was Melvan Whittington) but my searches did lead me to another bootleg treasure - containing a wonderful 'Joni' cover. Namely "The Blue Thumb Acetate" - various studio outtakes featuring Arthur Lee and Love with Jimi Hendrix recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, Barnes here in London back in 1970 - I particularly love this rather chaotic 10 minute instrumental jam called 'Loon' - http://blip.fm/~145lcz ..and at the end, Stephen Stills on organ, Jimi Hendrix on BASS and Buddy Miles on drums jamming on three takes of Joni's 'Woodstock' - the first, a short instrumental run through, the second, a short vocal version, and this, Take 3 - http://blip.fm/~145lzf Oh My! This rocks! Love the jam at the end! (Do you have these, Bob?) Thanks for the original inspiration Kakki x best to all PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2011 06:45:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: lisa hannigan covers joni's "willy" Thanks for sharing this. The first time I clicked on the link, I couldn't access the video, clicked on the "Earphoria" link and got one of those weird "This could be a virus" type messages. But, tried it again and... success! Thanks. I do love Lisa Hannigan. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: william burnworth > To: joni@smoe.org > Sent: Thu, April 28, 2011 3:46:40 PM > Subject: lisa hannigan covers joni's "willy" > >http://www.wearsthetrousers.com/2011/04/watch-lisa-hannigan-covers-joni-mitchell/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wearsthetrousers+%28wears+the+trousers%29 >9 > > not a sentence I'd imagine writing ;) > happy Jazzfest everybody > love, William(smiling wistfully from Miami) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2011 11:46:15 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: C&S piano chart added Dear pianists and students of Joni's composing, I have added a detailed transcription of Court and Spark to the piano database. Thanks so much for finding such rare pieces of the "holy grail"! I am still on a wild high from last night. The event was also the launch of a previously unreleased Gene Clark band record. I'd really rate them as a live band and was lucky enough to see them in London - one of the best concerts I've ever been to. It was a pity how Stills' music gradually went off the boil and never reached those heights again. I did see him live in London a couple of years ago and there was still enough there to make it a good evening. So much so, I cancelled a ticket for Brad Mehldau to see him again a week later. I think that Joni does get a good bit of time on this documentary but the focus was the three groups that ultimately made up Crosby Stills Nash and Young: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Hollies. I really enjoyed this documentary especially for the fact that my appreciation for Stephen Stills' talent grew immensely. He is an amazing song writer, and I loved when Graham Nash talks about them not having a good opening song for Dij` vu and Stephen came to him a day later with "Carry On." One of my favorite albums of all time, probably in my top 10, is Manassas. I was under the impression that this documentary had already been discussed here ... was it? I guess I should check the archives. Thanks Paul!!
